VIDEO | Chael Sonnen setting the stage for future Thero Sonnen vs. Kalyl Silva fight

By Tom Taylor - September 14, 2016

Fan favorite mouthpiece Chael Sonnen and middleweight legend Anderson Silva had one of the fiercest rivalries in MMA history.

The pair first met back in 2010, in the main event of UFC 117. On that night, Sonnen dominated four and a half rounds of their five-round fight, only to be tapped out by a triangle armbar as the bout’s final seconds melted off the clock.

Two years later, after a legendary war of words, the two fighters would meet again. This time around, the result was much more decisive, as Silva scored a second-round TKO after a Sonnen spinning attack backfired.

Today, Silva is no longer the middleweight champion. The legendary striker is currently on a disappointing four-fight losing streak, with a no contest against Nick Diaz in the middle of that stretch.

Sonnen, meanwhile, is now enjoying his retirement, making ends meet as a podcast host, commentator for World Series of Fighting, and analyst for ESPN.

Yet it appears we might be in for Silva vs. Sonnen 3 – though not in the way you’d imagine.

On Tuesday night, Sonnen took to Twitter with the video above, which shows his young son decked out in hand wraps, whacking a punching bag. Along with the video, Sonnen addressed Silva with the caption: I heard you son is training. Should we set a date?

This of course, is a joke on Sonnen’s part. While his son is only a toddler, Silva’s is much older, and from the looks of it, could become a very dangerous fighter in the future.

Do you think Chael Sonnen will ever emerge from retirement, and if so, might he fight Anderson Silva a third time? Sound off, PENN nation!
