Cris “Cyborg” Justino takes a page out of BJ Penn’s book in latest callout of Megan Anderson

By Tom Taylor - May 2, 2017

Cris “Cyborg” Justino is widely considered the best female featherweight on earth. Yet she is not the UFC women’s featherweight champion. That honor belongs instead to Germaine de Randamie, who won the belt with a hard-fought January defeat of Holly Holm.

Cris Cyborg vs. Megan Anderson

Given Cyborg’s status as the consensus best fighter in the division, she and her fans have long suggested she deserves a crack at De Randamie, and the UFC women’s featherweight belt. Unfortunately, De Randamie has been something of a ghost of late, giving little in the way of information as to when or against whom she might next defend her title.

Given this, Cyborg has recently made calls for a bout with reigning Invicta featherweight champion Megan Anderson, suggesting UFC 214 this July 29 as a possible setting. Though it’s difficult to say whether this potential fight would be a non-title bout, an interim title bout, or perhaps even a undisputed title fight, Cyborg has said she just wants to stay active for her fans.

On Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Anderson agreed to this possible scrap.

“I’ve always expressed interest in taking the next step up to the UFC,” Anderson said on the show. “We haven’t been approached about doing that, so I think really it’s on [the UFC] to come to us and say ‘hey let’s start negotiating.’ I feel like this is the fight that should have happened and I think now’s the time. If Germaine isn’t going to be able to do it, let’s crown the people’s champ.”

“I don’t need any more time. I’m fine for July 29,” Anderson added later. “Let’s do it.”

Anderson’s willingness to fight at UFC 214 unsurprisingly went over very well with team Cyborg. On Monday morning, the featherweight star took to social media to give a quick statement on the fight, suggesting it would be “to the death,” which is of course a quote made famous by our very own BJ Penn.
