Daniel Cormier goes off on Jon Jones for attending UFC 210

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is currently serving a one-year suspension retroactive to July of 2016, when USADA swooped in at the 11th hour and pulled Jones from his scheduled UFC 200 scrap with Daniel Cormier for a failed out-of-competition drug test. While it appeared as though Jones and his legal team were able to prove that one of the supplements the former champ was taking was tainted with a banned substance not listed on the packaging, he was still handed a one-year suspension.

Daniel Cormier interview

According to Daniel Cormier, who is gearing up for his UFC 210 title defense against Anthony Johnson this weekend, he’s seen posters around Buffalo, New York advertising Jones’ UFC 210 afterparty. The way the champ sees it, this is because Jones is “desperate”.

He spoke to BloodyElbow:

“If I was suspended for anything, especially for something whatever it may have said to be, there’s no way I’m out in public,” Cormier told Ariel Helwani in a pre-fight interview. “I’m staying home, I’d lick my wounds until my suspension is done, and then I’d come back out. But I think that says a lot about your character. Because are you truly sorry for what you did if you’re really still willing to prance around even though you’re still actually under suspension?”

“It doesn’t bother me, I just think he’s desperate,” Cormier continued. “Very desperate. He’s like the old quarterback that was super successful in high school, and he comes back to the parties with his jacket on.”

“You should be fighting here, not hanging around wearing your varsity jacket with your four state championships.”

Jones of course has fought just once in the past two years, defeating Ovince Saint Preux for the interim light heavyweight title at UFC 197 in April of 2016 following his infamous hit-and-run incident that saw him stripped of the title following his win over Daniel Cormier at UFC 182.
