Georges St-Pierre adds former opponent to training camp for Michael Bisping fight

By Tom Taylor - October 10, 2017

On November 4, in the main event of the absolutely stacked UFC 217, former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will make his long-awaited return to the Octagon. While St-Pierre’s previous dominance occurred at welterweight, however, this is not where his return will occur. Instead, he’ll be stepping up to middleweight to battle reigning champion Michael Bisping.

As the much smaller man in the Octagon, and a fighter riding a significant layoff, St-Pierre is in for a tough test opposite Bisping. That said, he seems to be taking his training very seriously, and even called on an old foe to help him prepare. That former foe is Jake Shields.

On Monday afternoon, Shields posted a photo to Instagram, which shows him and St-Pierre together inside Montreal’s world-famous Tristar gym.

Shields and St-Pierre shared the Octagon back in 2011, in the main event of UFC 129, which marked the promotion’s debut in Toronto. Though Shields performed admirably, even winning a round against St-Pierre, he became the latest name added to St-Pierre’s long list of victims, giving up a unanimous decision win.

After defeating Shields, St-Pierre went on to defend his title against Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz and Johny Hendricks. After his fight with Hendricks, which many fans believe he should have lost, he embarked on his long hiatus from the sport.

Shields, meanwhile, has spent the last few years competing in World Series of Fighting, which is now called the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
