Ryan Couture: 'I'd be surprised if my dad came out of retirement'

Fedor Emelianenko shocked the world when he announced his return to mixed martial arts at Bellator and GLORY’s “Dynamite” event earlier this month. “The Last Emperor” will not be fighting for Bellator, but rather a new Japanese promotion that will likely borrow Bellator’s talent for their first few shows. Emelianenko’s opponent remains unnamed, but fans are clamoring for a return to MMA for Randy Couture. UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture has not stepped foot inside of a cage for a fight since his loss to Lyoto Machida in 2011. Machida sent Couture tumbling to the canvas after catching him off guard with a jumping front kick and Couture has turned his concentration to career in Hollywood since then.

Check out the video below showing a behind the scenes all access look at Bellator ‘Dynamite’ from this past weekend. In the main event we saw Tito Ortiz take on Liam McGeary. Ortiz looked good early but ended up getting trapped in an inverted triangle and tapped out.

In the co-main event of Bellator 143, middleweights Kendall Grove and Joey Beltran faced off in the cage. The fight maybe wasn’t some were expecting it to be, for most of it. It wasn’t an all out war full of messy back and forth. Instead it featured Grove utilizing his boxing, and angles to pick Beltran apart.

Bellator light heavyweight ‘King Mo’ Lawal and MMA vet Tito Ortiz seem to have been at each others throats since Ortiz signed with the promotion. Most of it comes from the fact that Ortiz has not agreed to fight Mo, who starting calling for that fight a while ago. Mo claims Ortiz is ducking him, while Ortiz says that no one knows who he is, so why fight him.

All did not go well at today’s Bellator 143 weigh-ins. Actually everyone managed to make weight, except one. But that one missed weight by a lot, and I mean a lot. Nick Gonzalez, who was scheduled to fight Ryan Couture in a lightweight fight (lightweight!), ended up stepping on the scale and coming in at 172.75. To be clear, that’s missing weight for a welterweight fight as well. I mean, there’s bad weight cuts and then there’s not even giving a damn.

Ryan Couture may have simply been known as “the son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture” when he made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2010, but the lightweight is starting to step out of his father’s shadow and create a unique following of his own. While his father competed mainly for the UFC, Ryan has become a bit of a journeyman in MMA, learning lessons while fighting for both Strikeforce and UFC. Couture now calls Bellator his home and will be fighting for the promotion this Friday at “Bellator 143” when he steps into the cage to square off with Nick Gonzalez.

At Bellator ‘Dynamite’ MMA legend Tito Ortiz took on undefeated light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary in the night’s main event. Early in the fight it looked like everything was going Tito’s way. He got a quick takedown and started working his top game. It seemed like might be another Tito Ortiz ground and pound clinic, then he got caught.
