VIDEO | Jeff Mayweather confirms Floyd Mayweather training for Conor McGregor
This week, news surfaced that UFC President Dana White and UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor reached a deal in regards to a potential boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. With that deal done, White explained that he now will negotiate with Mayweather’s team in order to get the second deal done that will see Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather step into the boxing ring against each other.
McGregor released a statement on his deal with White, and White’s future negotiations with Mayweather’s team, saying:
“It is an honour to sign this record breaking deal alongside my partners Zuffa LLC, The Ultimate Fighting Championship and Paradigm Sports Management,” McGregor said in his statement.
“The first, and most important part of this historic contract has now officially been signed off on. Congratulations to all parties involved. We now await Al Haymon and his boxer’s signature in the coming days.”
While White wasn’t as confident as McGregor that a deal would be reached with Maywether’s team, Jeff Mayweather revealed in an interview with Helen Eye that his nephew is indeed training for Conor McGregor with another MMA fighter besides Kevin Lee, saying:
“Actually he must be preparing for the McGregor fight because he worked out with an MMA guy. It wasn’t Kevin Lee. Kevin was possibly going to be working with him, but for that day, no he didn’t work with him that day. I don’t know who it was. By the time I got here, Floyd was just getting done training and he was telling me, ‘Yeah I worked out today, I did 5 rounds or whatever’ and then once I came in everyone was telling me it was a UFC fighter, I’m not sure which one it was. This was probably about a week and a half ago.”
In terms of whether or not he believes the fight will happen, Jeff Maywather stated:
“I’m not really confident that it will happen, but I think it’s just a matter of…Floyd’s his own boss. If he wants to fight he’s gonna take it, if not…I mean him not fighting Connor doesn’t mean anything anyway.”
