Pound-for-pound great Canelo Alvarez is reportedly set to face Avni Yildirim in his next boxing match that’s set to take place in early 2021. Alvarez just defeated Callum Smith by a decision on December 19 in a lopsided super middleweight title fight. Although that fight went the 12-round distance, Alvarez didn’t take much if any damage against Smith and so he’s able to get back in the ring fairly quickly in 2021. After taking a few weeks off to spend time with his family for Christmas, Alvarez will get back in camp soon for a fight just two months away.

Pound-for-pound boxing great Canelo Alvarez issued a statement after beating Callum Smith, announcing to the sports world that “I’m back!” Alvarez moved up to the super middleweight division in this bout to take on Smith. Alvarez gave up six inches of height in the contest (5’9″ to 6’3″) and he also gave up a significant reach advantage, but none of those physical advantages for Smith mattered as Alvarez boxed him up for nearly the full 12 rounds. At the end of 36 minutes of boxing action, Alvarez won a unanimous decision (119-109, 119-109, 117-111). The lopsided win over Smith won Alvarez the WBC and WBA super-middleweight titles.

Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez returns to the squared circle this evening to square off with super-middleweight champion Callum Smith. Alvarez (53-1-2) was most recently seen in action in November of 2019 where he scored a eleventh round knockout win over Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO light heavyweight title. That victory improved Canelo’s current win streak to four in a row, as he had previously defeated Gennady Golovkin, Rocky Fielding and Daniel Jacobs.

Middleweight boxing champ Gennady Golovkin put on a show Friday night, stopping Kamil Szeremeta in the seventh round due to referee stoppage. Golovkin, one of the top-10 ranked pound-for-pound boxers in the world, took on Szeremeta at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. As expected, Golovkin put on a spectacular performance against an overmatched opponent. Golovkin scored four knockdowns en route to the referee stopping the fight due to TKO. With the win, Golovkin improved his professional boxing record to 41-1-1.

The opening odds have been released for the upcoming boxing match between superstar boxer Canelo Alvarez and Callum Smith. Canelo, a four-division champion and one of the greatest boxers competing today, has recently been embroiled in a legal battle with Golden Boy Promotions and the streaming service DAZN, with whom he signed a record-shattering $350M deal in 2018. The lawsuit, launched in a Los Angeles Federal Court, alleges Canelo’s multi-fight deal with GBP and DAZN was breached to the tune of $280 million in damages after they failed to find him a fight since he beat Sergey Kovalev in late 2019.

Some exciting news from the boxing world: According to a report from Lance Pugmire of The Athletic, Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin “have verbally agreed on financial terms to stage their trilogy fight.” According to The Athletic’s report, Canelo still intends to battle Billy Joe Saunders in a super middleweight unification bout in his next fight. The showdown with Golovkin is expected to follow thereafter, most likely on September 12 at AT&T Stadium outside Dallas, Texas.

DAZN made the controversial decision to delay the Alvarez vs. Kovalev fight in order to wait for the result of Masvidal vs. Diaz. It was a decision that brought on plenty of criticism of DAZN, who was accused of pandering to the UFC despite Alvarez being arguably the most highly-paid and important figure in the world of combat sports right now.
