Rocky Fielding lists the mistakes he made against ‘better man’ Canelo Alvarez

On Saturday night, amid the buzz of UFC on FOX 31 in Milwaukee and Bellator 213 in Hawaii, boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez authored yet another impressive victory, this time at the expense of England’s Rocky Fielding inside New York City’s hallowed Madison Square Garden.

From the moment the bout began, Canelo targeted Fielding’s body, slowly pounding his opponent’s midsection into mush. The Mexican superstar scored body shot induced knockdowns in the first and second rounds, and mid-way through the third, sealed the deal with a ferocious assault that left his foe deflated on the canvas like a punctured beach ball.

Speaking post-fight, Canelo revealed that this body-centric attack was precisely the plan he and his team had developed heading into the contest.

“That was the plan we had, to attack the body,” Canelo said. “He committed the error by continuing to exchange with me. But that’s what we worked on, to hit the body hard. Thank God everything went well. This is a feeling that is hard to describe and I share it with all the people of New York.”

In this lopsided fight, Fielding responded to Canelo’s relentless body attack in undeniably questionable fashion, choosing to engage the powerful Mexican in close rather than use his significant height and reach advantages to stay out of danger.

Post-fight, Fielding owned up to this mistake.

“He’s an elite fighter, you know,” the Brit said after the fight. “I went in there trying my best and that’s what elite fighters are like.

“The body shots were more like the wind was getting took, se he placed the shots well,” he added. “I stood there too long. I thought I could try to mix it with him when I shouldn’t have. Again, as I said, you see the height of me compared to him, I should have kept it long, but I just stood there with someone who’s elite and who’s stronger, and he caught me. I gave it everything and the better man won.”

“I dared to be great, I lived a dream,” he concluded. “I’ll come again, I’ll come back. Hats off to Canelo. He’s a great fighter, I respect him. I’ll come back.”
