Dominic Breazeale protests Deontay Wilder KO: Stoppage was ‘a little early’
On Saturday night, Deontay Wilder was set for his first boxing fight since his controversial draw against Tyson Fury back in December.
This time, Wilder was taking on Dominic Breazeale. Although the challenger landed a few good shots in the opening moments, the WBC heavyweight champ opened up on the 33-year-old and appeared to knock him out cold just 2:17 into the first round.
Dominic Breazeale has since done an interview and he believes the ref stopped the fight too early.
“I think the ref stopped it a little early because I could hear him saying seven and eight, but that’s boxing,” said Breazeale (via Bad Left Hook). “He did his job and kept us safe for our next fight.
“I got on my feet and had my legs under me. It’s the heavyweight division so there’s going to big shots from guys with power. This was a situation where he landed the big right hand before I did. I thought I was going to come on in the later rounds. I’ll be back and go for the heavyweight title again.”

For Wilder, after he hit Breazeale with one punch, he knew it was only a matter of time before he knocked him out.
“I saw him slow up a little bit,” Wilder said following the fight (via CBS Sports). “When I hit him with the right hand the first time his body language changed. When you’ve been in with so many guys, you can recognize body language.”
With the loss, Breazeale is now 20-2. His other loss came at the hands of heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua where he was TKO’d in the seventh round back in 2016.
Deontay Wilder, on the other hand, improved to 41-0-1 and retained the WBC heavyweight title for the ninth consecutive time.
