Tyson Fury expects rematch with Deontay Wilder in Spring 2020

By Mike Pendleton - May 21, 2019

Despite the fantastic performance by Deontay Wilder this past weekend in his first-round knockout victory, boxing fans will have to wait a while before seeing a rematch between Wilder and Tyson Fury.

Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder

During an appearance on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on ESPN, the “Gypsy King” Fury was a guest and announced that he expects a rematch to happen with Wilder in the spring of 2020. Many anticipated a rematch between Wilder and Fury would happen right away after their thrilling draw last December, but that is not the case according to Fury.

While Deontay Wilder wasted no time in getting back to the boxing ring, he ended up facing Dominic Breazeale as the WBC mandatory challenger rather than a rematch with Fury, who ended up signing a deal with ESPN. Tyson Fury told Ariel Helwani that Wilder had signed a three-fight deal before he [Fury] committed to a deal with ESPN.

“Deontay Wilder apparently signed a three-fight deal before I signed an ESPN deal. He signed a deal to fight Dominic Breazeale, Luis Ortiz, and Adam Kownacki so this is all done before we put pen to paper.”

Tyson Fury would go on to say that he has a “few fights” on his first deal with ESPN and expressed interest in sticking with ESPN and Top Rank throughout the remainder of his career, but did include that he and Wilder being signed to separate deals doesn’t mean they can’t fight.

“If the fighters are willing to fight then why should a network get in the way? Fighters use that as an excuse, AKA Anthony Joshua, he uses that a lot as an excuse. But I believe if the fighters really want to fight each other, as I proved, I was on BT Sport, I came over to the United States and fought on Showtime.”

Although the boxing world will have to wait on a possible rematch between the two heavyweight superstars, Tyson Fury seems set to make sure the rematch happens against Deontay Wilder.

Following Wilder’s first-round knockout of Breazeale, Fury gave praise to the “Bronze Bomber” but ultimately said he’s the “second baddest man on the planet.”

While the battle of networks and money continue on in the boxing world, Fury and Wilder seem ready to give the fans the rematch they’ve all been waiting for.
