Tyson Fury tests positive for cocaine
Friday morning, news surfaced that heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury had been notified of a failed drug test for cocaine.
ESPN is reporting that The drug test, which was performed on September 22nd in Lancaster, England, by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association revealed that Fury had tested positive for benzoylegonine, the main chemical component found in cocaine.
Fury was set to face Wladimir Klitschko on October 29th in a highly anticipated rematch for the heavyweight world championship, however last week he suddenly pulled out of the bout without disclosing the specific reason. Shortly after Fury withdrew from the bout, it was revealed that Fury was deemed “medically unfit” to compete in the match against Klitschko.
ESPN obtained a document that was sent to Fury, Klitschko, the British Boxing Board of Control and the United States’ Association of Boxing Commissions by VADA in regards to Fury’s failed drug test which read:
“This letter is to advise you that the ‘A’ sample urine specimen number 4006253 collected from Tyson Fury on September 22, 2016 in Lancaster, England through his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) program has been analyzed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, stimulants and drugs of abuse. The results of the analysis are as follows: Adverse. Urine specimen contains benzoylecgonine.”
While there has been no official word yet on how Fury’s failed drug test will be handled, it is expected that he will be stripped of his heavyweight championship.
Fury would have entered his rematch with Klitschko on a 25 fight win streak that has seen him go undefeated throughout the course of his professional career. Most recently Fury defeated Klitschko for the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO, The Ring, and lineal heavyweight titles nearly a year ago.
For Klitscho, the loss to Fury marked just the 4th loss of his professional career, snapping his 18 straight title defenses.
