UFC 237 | Frankie Edgar “Dreaming” If He Thinks He’s Getting Title Shot

Alex Volkanovski believes that Jose Aldo, not Frankie Edgar, is the only man standing between himself and a UFC featherweight title shot. Volkanovski is set to square off with Aldo at May’s UFC 237 pay-per-view event in Rio and believes that a win over the former featherweight kingpin should guarantee him the next shot at current 145-pound title holder Max Holloway.

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway is headed up to the lightweight division for an interim title fight with Dustin Poirier. While he’s stated that he hopes to return to the featherweight division and defend his belt thereafter, it’s not completely clear how things will actually unfold if he wins interim lightweight gold. Whatever the case, top featherweight contender Alexander Volkanovski wants Max Holloway to know that he still has work to do in the featherweight division.

After his thrilling UFC 232 defeat of Chad Mendes, Australia’s Alexander Volkanovski is right on the cusp of a shot at the UFC featherweight title. Speaking on Twitter this weekend, however, the surging featherweight contender issued a callout of UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Prior to his success in MMA, Volkanovski was a rugby player. During his rugby days, he apparently weighed more than 210 pounds — pretty incredible considering he hit the 145-pound mark at the UFC 232 weigh ins.

The main card of UFC 232, which went down on Saturday night inside The Forum in the Inglewood, California, was kicked off by a high-stakes featherweight showdown between three-time title challenger Chad Mendes, and surging Australian contender Alexander Volkanovski. The pair collided in hopes of establishing themselves as one of the next men in line for UFC featherweight king Max Holloway. To remind, this was a fight Volkanovski actually asked for after defeating Darren Elkins at UFC Boise earlier this year. It was an action-packed scrap while it lasted.

Alex Volkanovski is a streaking featherweight who is currently riding a lofty 15-fight winning streak. Even with that, the Australian is only ranked 10th in the featherweight division. However, that can all change on Dec. 29 at UFC 232, where Volkanovski will have his toughest test to date when he takes on Chad Mendes. Mendes is a two-time title challenger and is currently ranked fifth in the division. Put all of that together and it is a huge fight for Volkanovski.

Last weekend, on the undercard of UFC Boise, Australian featherweight contender Alexander Volkanovski picked up the biggest win of his career thus far, dominating the durable Darren Elkins to a lopsided unanimous decision win. In the moments after this win, Volkanovski said that he’d like to fight Chad Mendes next, so long as Mendes defeated Myles Jury on the UFC Boise main card.
