The undercard to UFC 285 continues to build, as women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has been added. ‘Bullet’ has been out of action since her clash with Taila Santos at UFC 275 last June. In that outing, the Brazilian brought the fight to the champion, who was a heavy favorite. Despite early success from Santos, Shevchenko rallied in the championship rounds.

In the main event of UFC Vegas 62, a top-six women’s flyweight bout headlined the card as Alexa Grasso took on Viviane Araujo. Grasso entered the fight undefeated at flyweight after moving up in 2020 with a decision win over Ji Yeon Kim. The Mexican then beat Maycee Barber by decision and followed it up with a submission win over Joanne Wood to earn her first UFC main event. Meanwhile, Araujo returned to the win column last time with a win over Andrea Lee and was 5-2 in the UFC entering the scrap.

With the win, Grasso improves to 5-3 overall in the UFC, including a perfect 2-0 mark since moving up to flyweight. After struggling to go on a winning streak while fighting at 115lbs, it appears the young Mexican fighter has figured out that her proper weight class is at 125lbs. If she looks as good as she did against Barber, the 27-year-old Grasso could make a run for the flyweight belt.

Prior to the loss, Maycee had gone a perfect 8-0 in her young career, which included three stoppage wins under the UFC banner.
