Tom Taylor - November 12, 2018
Swedish light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson is currently gearing up for a December 29, UFC 232-headlining rematch with Jon Jones. The pair first met in the main event of UFC 165, in September of 2013. On that night Jones defended the UFC light heavyweight title with a hard-fought unanimous decision victory, although many onlookers felt Gustafsson should have gotten the nod — and the title.

Jon Jones on 2013 war with Alexander Gustafsson: 'I didn’t train very hard for that fight'
Tom Taylor - September 26, 2018
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has experienced very little in the way of adversity inside the cage. In fact, the former champ has really only been truly tested once. That was in 2013, when he met Swedish light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson in the main event of UFC 165 in Toronto. On that night, Jones had to fight tooth and nail to escape with his title. And while he ultimately managed to win this wild war by decision, many fans feel Gustafsson did enough to win the belt. Today, when Jon Jones’ 15-month USADA suspension is almost complete, and Alexander Gustafsson remains one of the very top players in the UFC light heavyweight division, it seems very possible that the two rivals could meet again in the near future.

Tom Taylor - September 23, 2018
Earlier this week, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was handed a 15 month suspension by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, retroactive to late July of 2017. This means that Jones will be able to fight again by November, if he so chooses. Ever since this announcement, Jones’ former opponent Alexander Gustafsson has been calling him out. Alexander Gustafsson, to remind, gave Jon Jones his toughest test to date at UFC 165 in 2013. In fact, many fans feel Gustafsson did enough to earn the win over Jones.

In 2013, we witnessed one of if not the greatest UFC title fight in the company’s history and it went down in the prestigious light heavyweight division. That fight, of course, was none other than the clash between the then champion Jon “Bones” Jones and the challenger, Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson. Since then, the two have gone in fairly separate directions.

Alexander Gustafsson discusses "crazy" events that led to UFC 227 exit
Tom Taylor - July 24, 2018
For a brief period, two-time UFC light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson was expected to return to the cage at UFC 227 on August 4. Unfortunately, that plan did not work out. First, Gustafsson’s planned opponent Volkan Oezdemir withdrew from their fight an injury. Then, shortly after he was called out by rising contenders Khalil Rountree and Anthony Sith, Gustafsson was forced off the card with an injury of his own.

Alexander Gustafsson injured, unable accept Anthony Smith callout
Tom Taylor - July 22, 2018
On Sunday afternoon, Anthony Smith dispatched of another MMA legend, clubbing former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua with first-round strikes in the UFC Hamburg main event. In the wake of this incredible knockout, Smith could have called out pretty much anybody, from Corey Anderson, who won in the UFC Hamburg co-main event, to Jimi Manuwa, who sat cage-side for the card. Instead of calling out either of these men, however, he targeted a showdown with top light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson.

“I’m in, man [to fill in at UFC 227 for Volkan Oezdemir]. I got a pretty tall task ahead of me, ya know, with [Mauricio] ‘Shogun’ [Rua]. But if it goes well and I get out of there uninjured, I have no problem leaving here and going straight to LA. I’m in.

Alexander Gustafsson feels Daniel Cormier is "better at heavyweight"
Tom Taylor - July 16, 2018
Alexander Gustafsson, who is currently the top contender in the UFC light heavyweight division, wasn’t particularly pleased when UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier moved up to heavyweight to battle divisional champion Stipe Miocic. Despite his frustrations with Cormier leaving the division, however, Gustafsson admits he was very impressed with the way Cormier ultimately defeated Miocic. “He did great. I’m impressed,” Gustafsson told Luke Thomas on the latest edition of The MMA Hour (transcribed by Peter Carroll for MMA Fighting). “I was impressed by the way he finished Stipe and how he won the fight. I’m very impressed by the guy, he did great.”

Alexander Gustafsson to Daniel Cormier: "fight me or let the belt go"
Tom Taylor - July 10, 2018
When UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier opted to move up to heavyweight to challenge Stipe Miocic for gold, he deprived light heavyweight number-one contender Alexander Gustafsson of the title shot most feel he’s earned. When Cormier defeated Miocic and set his sights on a heavyweight money fight with Brock Lesnar, he ensured that Gustafsson will have to go even longer before he gets a crack at the light heavyweight title. It probably goes without saying, but Gustafsson is not happy about this. Although he’s currently scheduled for a UFC 227 fight with Volkan Oezdemir, Gustafsson feels that, if Cormier plans on staying at heavyweight for some time, he should vacate the light heavyweight title. At the very least, he thinks his UFC 227 clash with Oezdemir should be deemed an interim title fight.
