Anderson Silva Has Been Tested by USADA More Times Than Any Other Fighter in 2016

By Tom Taylor - October 30, 2016

Anderson Silva, who is widely considered the greatest fighter in the history of mixed martial arts, is the keeper of many impressive records.

He’s headlined more pay-per-views than any fighter in UFC history, at 15. He’s tied with Vitor Belfort for the most finishes achieved in UFC history, at 15. He’s earned more knockdowns than any fighter in UFC history, at 18 He’s the owner of the longest winning streak in UFC history, at 16 wins. He’s the longest reigning champion in UFC history, having sat atop the middleweight throne for 2,457 days. During that reign he made more consecutive title defenses than any fighter in UFC history, at 10.

According to a report from Champions.co, Anderson Silva can now also claim to be one of the most tested fighters in UFC history. Having been tested by the United States Anti-Doping Commission (USADA) a whopping 15 times this year, he is far and away the most tested fighter of 2016.

USADA’s apparent interest in Silva, of course, stems from a failed 2015 test, which saw him test positive for anabolic steroids and traces of endogenous testosterone in the wake of decision defeat of Nick Diaz. These failed tests resulted in his win being ruled a no contest. Since this unfortunate twist in his legendary career, Silva has had no further brushes with USADA.

For context, consider the number of tests received by some of the UFC’s other top stars this year. Bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz and recently-retired middleweight Dan Henderson have both been tested 10 times. Cris “Cyborg” Justino, Michael Bisping and Nate Diaz have all been tested 9 times. Irish superstar Conor McGregor has been tested 8 times. Troubled former light heavyweight king Jon Jones has been tested 5 times.

Since their partnership with the UFC commenced mid-way through 2015, USADA has flagged dozens of fighters, including stars like Brock Lesnar, Jon Jones, Yoel Romero and Chad Mendes. The organization is know for their intrusive, but undeniably effective strategy of showing up at fighters’ homes unannounced at strange hours, and their willingness to enter uncomfortable situations with fighters to assure testing remains legitimate.

What do you think of USADA’s efforts with the UFC? Sound off, PENN Nation!
