Anderson Silva weighs-in on controversial Chris Weidman stoppage
This past weekend at UFC 210, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman stepped into the Octagon to fight Gegard Mousasi in a highly anticipated middleweight showdown. Going into the fight, Weidman stepped into the Octagon on a 2-fight skid that saw him most recently drop a 3rd round TKO to Yoel Romero after dropping a 4th round TKO to Luke Rockhold, which saw him lose the UFC middleweight title in a rather one sided affair.
In his most recent fight, Weidman looked to snap Gegard Mousasi’s 4-fight win streak that saw him go undefeated over the course of 2016. Unfortunately for the former champ, he picked up his third straight loss as he was declared TKOd by Gegard Mousasi after a rather controversial knee.
In a new interview with MMAJunkie, Anderson Silva spoke about the controversial situation, saying:
“I quickly saw a clip the guys showed me on their phones,” Silva said. “The rule is very clear: He didn’t have his hand on the ground. So, he was kneed and the knee was legal. The rule is clear. If he has his hands on the ground, four points of contact, you can’t hit him. Mousasi lifted him off the ground when he was hitting. It was the ref’s mistake, obviously, and when he put his hands back there, he was defenseless.
“But these are things that happen. Weidman is a very lucky guy, and this time he wasn’t lucky. He’s very lucky, but his luck ran out. He had some luck for a while, and now it’s over.”
Silva is of course currently awaiting news on who he will fight at UFC 212 in June now that he has been left without an opponent following Kelvin Gastelum being pulled from the card by USADA.
