After KO win over Michael Chandler, Patricio Freire wants Canelo Alvarez next
Patricio Freire became the second fighter in Bellator history to become a champ-champ last night at Bellator 221. The reigning featherweight champion moved up in weight to take on Michael Chandler, and knocked the lightweight champion out in just 61 seconds.
However, immediately after the ref jumped in to stop the fight, Chandler got up and appeared to be fine. But, according to Freire, the 33-year-old was out.
“He was sleeping,” Freire told MMA Junkie after the fight. “He kissed the floor, so I’m good with that. … I won the fight. You saw that. He watched the video (replay) after the fight, and he saw he lost.”
Now, Freire has options for his next fight. Taking on A.J. McKee makes sense, given the undefeated fighter beat Pat Curran last night as well. Although that fight intrigues Freire he doesn’t want that next.
“He was afraid,” Freire said. “Let’s do (a fight). I’m going to kill him. … If he can do it at featherweight, let’s go.”
Yet Patricio Freire also has another idea for his next fight — and it’s a little outside the box. He wants to fight one of the best boxers on this planet right now in Canelo Alvarez. The Mexican, who is currently signed with DAZN, is 52-1-2 with his only loss coming at the hands of Floyd Mayweather.
“I think I can do well with him,” Freire said. “I watched his last fight, and I believe I can fight him. Now I have two belts. He has a lot of belts, too, and it’s going to be a good match.”
Bellator has not yet commented on this possibility, so there’s no telling if they would let their new champ-champ fight a boxing fight against Alvarez. Freire also told reporters he hasn’t talked to Bellator President Scott Coker or DAZN about a potential fight just yet.
