Joey Beltran: “I’m Not Fighting My Buddy Halsey For Chump Change!”

By Chris Taylor - September 18, 2015

Mixed Martial Arts veteran Joey Beltran (16-11 MMA) made his middleweight debut at April’s Bellator 136 event, where he scored a unanimous decision victory over Brian Rogers.

“The Mexicutioner” is set to return to action later this month when he battles Kendall Grove in the co-main event of Bellator 143.

With a win over Grove on September 25, Beltran would likely jump to the front of the line in terms of receiving a Bellator middleweight title shot.

The only problem is that Beltran’s friend and training partner Brandon Halsey (9-0 MMA) could very well be holding the coveted 185-strap if he is to defeat Rafael Carvalho on October 23 at Bellator 144.

So, would Beltran put his friendship with Halsey aside to fight for Bellator gold? Here is what “The Mexicutioner” had to say on the subject during a recent interview with BJPENN.com’s Chris Taylor:

“To be honest with you, I am looking for the fight that is going to produce the most dollar signs. If Bellator puts it to me, just throwing a number out there, but if they say we will give you a million dollars for you and Brandon (Halsey) to go beat the shit out of each other, well then we are going to go out there and do it. You know, I’m definitely not going to fight my friend and training partner for $15,000, let’s keep it real right now. I’m not going to fight my buddy for chump change. But if they were to put a good number together and a nice promotional package then I would have to consider it. And Brandon would say the same thing if you asked him. We are both fathers, we both have kids at home and families. We have retirement that we have to think about, so we have to treat this as a business. Me and Brandon already beat the crap out of each other in the gym, so we might as well do it under the lights.”
