Beat the Streets results: Jordan Burroughs shuts out Ben Askren (Highlights)
Ahead of his big potential No. 1 welterweight contender match-up with Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239 in July, Ben Askren challenged himself by getting back on the mats against one of the best wrestlers of this or any era, Jordan Burroughs. The two would meet inside Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York City for the Beat the Streets 2019 charity event.
As one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of MMA, the undefeated “Funky” Askren vs someone of Burroughs’ caliber was the definition of a dream wrestling match as the 30-year old has won a gold medal in essentially every competition that he’s been a part of. But the University of Missouri alumni in Askren doesn’t have the worst wrestling credentials either (obviously).
Prior to the highly anticipated match-up, things got a little wild as JoJo Aragona launched Adam Busiello right off the stage. Aragona would go on to get the pin shortly after.
Jack Mueller also found himself having a pretty good night as he picked up a win over Nick Piccinni.
Another wrestling great in the 23-year old youngest Olympic gold medalist wrestler of all time and American world champion, Kyle Snyder was in action.
Snyder would dominate his opponent 10-1 and capped things off with a big German suplex in the final 10 seconds.
We finally got to the main event after plenty of fun matches. Askren and Burroughs started out patiently but it was Burroughs who initiated first with a single leg attempt that ran Askren right off the stage. Shortly after, Burroughs hit a huge blast double. Another one followed at about the one minute mark of the opening frame, less emphatically. No takedown attempts from Askren as he was down 0-8 going into period two.
A quick ankle pick to kick off period two for Burroughs that gave him the win 11-0.
