VIDEOS | 14 Years Ago Today BJ Penn Submitted Takanori Gomi

Justin Golightly - October 10, 2017

Years before Conor McGregor skirted his flame-shooting Lambo into the UFC to capture double gold and jump around for big fights, there was BJ Penn. When the first UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver left the organization, the UFC put on a lightweight tournament to crown a new king of the world at 155-pounds. But after BJ Penn and Caol Uno fought to a draw in the finals, the UFC dissolved the entire division. This is what prompted Penn to search out new challenges, resulting in fighting future PRIDE lightweight champion Takanori Gomi in K-1 back in 2003. Oct10.2003

Joe Lauzon roasts Nik Lentz for recent BJ Penn comments: he "smoked you in the gym"

Tom Taylor - July 5, 2017

Shortly after BJ Penn came up short to Dennis Siver in late June, he was attacked on social media by an undeniably classless Nik Lentz. While Penn chose not to engage Lentz on this one, his good friend Joe Lauzon couldn’t let Lentz’s comments slide. Replying to Lentz on Reddit over the weekend, Lauzon absolutely brutalized Lentz with a fiery comment that challenged the lightweight’s legacy, and reminded him that Penn whooped him during their brief stint training together.

Tom Taylor - June 25, 2017

On Sunday night, the UFC touched down in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma with UFC Fight Night 112. The main card of this anticipated, 13-fight event occurred in the featherweight division, where our very own BJ Penn – a former two-division champ and a UFC Hall of Famer – collided with German veteran Dennis Siver. Though Penn nearly finished his foe in the second round, dropping him with a blistering uppercut, Siver was the far busier man throughout the rest of the fight.

BJ Penn planning to continue fighting with win on Sunday

bjpenndotcom - June 24, 2017

UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn is currently preparing to step into the Octagon with UFC veteran Dennis Siver Sunday night in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he will look to once again have his hand raised in front of fight fans. Ahead of the fight, many have questioned whether Penn plans to retire from MMA following the fight on Sunday, regardless of whether he wins or loses. While Penn has proven time and time again to have the indomitable spirit of a fighter, he spoke to MMAJunkie ahead of his fight with Siver to reveal that while he briefly considered retirement following his January loss to Yair Rodriguez, he quickly regained his fire to continue fighting:

BJ Penn looks back on Yair Rodriguez loss: why didn’t I just slam him on his head like Frankie Edgar?

Tom Taylor - June 22, 2017

He did so against red hot featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez. Though Penn fought valiantly, this fight unfortunately didn’t go his way, as he was finished by a volley of second-round Rodriguez strikes.

BJ Penn explains what makes Dennis Siver such a dangerous opponent

Tom Taylor - June 22, 2017

This Sunday, on the main card of the UFC’s anticipated stop in Oklahoma City, our very own BJ Penn will return to the Octagon opposite dangerous German veteran Dennis Siver. In advance of this compelling scrap, Penn joined host Kinch on BJ Penn Radio to discuss Siver as an opponent. “I think he’s a great opponent,” Penn said of his Oklahoma City dance partner. “I think it’s a great matchup for me. Other people might not. I don’t know if Siver was watching my last fight [against Yair Rodriguez] and was like ‘oh we can capitalize here and there,’ but that’s on him. That’s his work he’s got to do. But I think he’s a great fighter. I’ve never really seen him be disrespectful to any opponents or anything like that. He’s just out there doing his thing.”

Cris "Cyborg" Justino takes a page out of BJ Penn's book in latest callout of Megan Anderson

Tom Taylor - May 2, 2017

Cris “Cyborg” Justino is widely considered the best female featherweight on earth. Yet she is not the UFC women’s featherweight champion. That honor belongs instead to Germaine de Randamie, who won the belt with a hard-fought January defeat of Holly Holm. Given Cyborg’s status as the consensus best fighter in the division, she and her fans have long suggested she deserves a crack at De Randamie, and the UFC women’s featherweight belt. Unfortunately, De Randamie has been something of a ghost of late, giving little in the way of information as to when or against whom she might next defend her title.

BJ Penn discusses Conor McGregor's chances against Floyd Mayweather

Tom Taylor - April 3, 2017

There is currently no bigger story in the world of combat sports than that of Conor McGregor‘s plans to challenge undefeated boxing great Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring. While this fight’s fruition is still far from a certainty, many members of the combat sports world are chiming in, giving their opinions on it. The latest to do so is our very own BJ Penn, who shared his thoughts on this possible boxing match in an interview with Chris Taylor. “I would think in a straight boxing match Floyd would have to have the advantage,” Penn said of this possible showdown. “But Connor is younger, bigger, and in his prime, and in combat sports all it takes is one punch. That’s the way I look at it.”

Yair Rodriguez says his celebrity increased after BJ Penn win

Tom Taylor - February 14, 2017

Last month, Mexican featherweight contender Yair Rodriguez scored a nice win over UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn. Now several weeks removed from this win, the wild striking specialist explained to MMA Junkie that his defeat of Penn has made him a much more visible celebrity. “To be honest, before BJ, of course people recognized me, but not as much as this time,” he explained. “Now I can see in the United States a lot of people are asking me for pictures, autographs and all that stuff. Before it was just in Mexico and Latin America. Now it’s everywhere.”
