Daniel Cormier open to fighting Brock Lesnar at UFC 233
While Daniel Cormier defends his heavyweight title Saturday at UFC 230 against Derrick Lewis, the two-division UFC champion can’t escape questions regarding a possible fight with Brock Lesnar.
The 34-year-old hinted that, if he can come out unscathed from Saturday’s title fight, it’s possible we could see him fight Lesnar sooner rather than later.
“January 26 in Anaheim [UFC 233], is Brock eligible by then?” Cormier asked the media ahead of UFC 230 (h/t MMAFighting)
“[Lesnar] looks smaller on WWE right now? You see his face? He looks tiny. Yeah, maybe on January 26. I think I have a wrestling tournament that weekend, But we will see. I like Brock, I really do. Brock just isn’t going to take no shit. Brock isn’t going to mess around with you. But, I like Brock. I have known him for a long time, I met Brock in 1998,”
Cormier (21-1, NC) looks to make the first successful defense of his heavyweight title Saturday and subsequently push his unbeaten streak to eight fights. When he won the heavyweight title in July – knocking out former champion Stipe Miocic in the first round at UFC 226 – it appeared as though his next fight would be against the WWE superstar.
However when a number of changes were made to UFC 230, including an injury to co-main event fighter Dustin Poirier, Cormier stepped up on short notice to face “The Black Beast” in the main event.
Lesnar (5-3, NC) hasn’t competed since a no contest against Mark Hunt at UFC 200 in July of 2016. The 41-year-old originally won the fight by unanimous decision however a failed USADA test caused this result to be overturned. Should these two juggernauts square off, Lesnar will be looking for his first win in the octagon since July 2010 when he defeated Shane Carwin at UFC 116.
UFC 230 takes place this Saturday in New York, New York at Madison Square Garden.
Do you think we’ll see Daniel Cormier and Brock Lesnar fight at UFC 233?
