Mark Hunt reacts to Brock Lesnar’s one year suspension
Earlier this week, former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar received his punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his pair of failed drug tests surrounding his UFC 200 fight with Mark Hunt back in July.
After it was announced in June that Lesnar would be returning to the Octagon to fight Hunt at UFC 200 in July, it was also revealed that the UFC had waived the mandatory testing period a fighter must go through in order to become eligible in the eyes of USADA. That didn’t sit too well with many fight fans, and USADA responded by testing Lesnar several times over the course of one week.
Following his win over Hunt, it was revealed that not only did Lesnar fail a pre-fight drug test during the month leading up to the fight, he also failed a fight night drug test for PEDs. Hunt was irate over the situation, and went off on the UFC in several interviews over the matter.
Earlier this week, news surfaced that the NSAC handed Lesnar a one year suspension, a $250,000 fine, and overturned his win over Hunt to a no-contest.
Hunt, who has stated that he will no longer fight unless there is a provision in future UFC contracts protecting fighters from those who fail drug tests, spoke to MMAFighting to react to the decision handed down by the NSAC:
“It’s not harsh enough considering he gets the same [punishment] as Jon Jones and Jones didn’t fight,” Hunt told Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting. “Would that penalty have sufficed if I had died or been maimed?”
“Like I said, if you’re not going to make it an even playing field or a fair go, you’re not going to put a clause in my contract that says that makes me a feel a bit more better, well then why should I…I’m already in a contract I can’t get out of. I want compensation for what’s happened and I want a change,” Hunt said last month on The MMA Hour. “Either that or release me from my contract.”
