Cain Velasquez on Brock Lesnar’s PED-bust: It Didn’t Surprise Me

Shortly after he defeated Mark Hunt at UFC 200, former UFC heavyweight champion and WWE star Brock Lesnar was flagged for the estrogen blocker clomiphene. While this news was certainly disappointing, nobody was particularly surprised by it.

During Tuesday’s episode of The MMA Hour, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, who won his title by smashing Lesnar to a first-round TKO back in 2010, admitted that he wasn’t especially shocked by the news of his former foe’s bust.

“Looking at his body it didn’t surprise me,” Velasquez told host Ariel Helwani on the show. “He’s a big, massive guy, and you don’t see other fighters looking like that.”

Of course, just because Velasquez wasn’t surprised by the news doesn’t mean he wasn’t disappointed by it.

“It kind of sucks,” the former champion told Helwani. “I want my competitors, the guy that I fight, to be on the same level that I am.”

Despite his disappointment, Velasquez did share his optimism surrounding the efforts of USADA, the UFC’s anti-doping partner.

“It’s good that we’re catching [steroid users], that USADA is doing a good job catching people cheating,” he said. “Hopefully that discourages people from doing that sort of thing so that this sport can be a clean sport.”

Just hours before Lesnar defeated Hunt at UFC 200, Velasquez scored a big win of his own, mauling Travis Browne in the first round of their main card, heavyweight showdown. Having scored this win, he can probably look forward to a scrap with the winner of Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem’s UFC 203 heavyweight title fight this weekend.

Do share Velasquez’s faith in USADA, or do you think MMA’s steroid problem will continue? Sound off, PENN nation!
