Cain Velasquez calls for Fabricio Werdum rematch

When Cain Velasquez returned to the Octagon and defeated Junior dos Santos at UFC 155 to reclaim the UFC heavyweight championship, many believed that Velasquez would reign as the UFC’s heavyweight champion for quite some time.

Unfortunately for Velasquez, he defended the belt twice before meeting Fabricio Werdum in the Octagon at UFC 188. Werdum dominated the fight, as Velasquez quickly gassed out, and ultimately picked up a submission win to claim the UFC heavyweight championship.

After once again returning to the UFC, and the win column, Velasquez believes that he is poised for a title shot against Stipe Miocic. With that being said, Miocic has stated that he would like a break following UFC 203.

With the heavyweight champ sidelined, Velasquez believes that the time is now for a rematch with Fabricio Werdum. A rematch which Velasquez said is personal.

He spoke on UFC Tonight:

“[Miocic] looked good, he moves around very well,” Velasquez told UFC Tonight. “He’s hard to put away. He’s out there for the grind. If Stipe doesn’t want a break, I want him. If he wants to fight in 2017, I’d like to fight Werdum in December. This is personal.”

After winning the heavyweight championship from Velasquez, Werdum lost the belt in his first title defense to Stipe Miocic. He returned to action this past weekend at UFC 203, where he faced Travis Browne. The fight was a particularly dominant one for Werdum, who picked up a unanimous decision and cemented his place at the top of the UFC’s heavyweight division.

Following the event, Werdum is ranked as the #1 contender on the UFC’s heavyweight rankings, while Cain Velasquez sits at #2 on the heavyweight ladder.
