Cain Velasquez ready to “beat Werdum’s ass”
At UFC 207 on December 30th, former UFC heavyweight champions Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum will square off in a highly anticipated heavyweight #1 contender fight. In addition to a title fight with Stipe Miocic being on the line, the fight will give Velasquez a chance to avenge his UFC 188 loss to Werdum.
In that fight, the pair met in the main event of UFC 188 in Mexico City, where Werdum’s cardio proved to be the X-factor as he submitted Velasquez in the third round, and unified the UFC heavyweight championship and the interim heavyweight championship.
Now, over a year later, Velasquez will have the chance to avenge the loss when he and Werdum step into the Octagon at UFC 207.
Ahead of the fight however, there has been some confusion regarding Velasquez’ health status. Leading up to the fight, it was revealed that Velasquez was scheduled to have back surgery just days after the fight. Velasquez himself then revealed that he had been using CBD Oil throughout training camp to manage back pain, but that he had discontinued use of the compound a week before weigh-ins, so as not to cause a problem with USADA, despite the fact that CBD Oil isn’t banned out-of-competition by USADA.
In a recent interview with MMAFighting, Velasquez shed some light on his pre-fight medical screening that he will undergo, his CBD Oil usage, and his plan to defeat Fabricio Werdum and secure a title fight with Stipe Miocic:
“He (The UFC Dr.) is going to look me over and give me the green light and then call the UFC and do the same there.”
…
“Yeah, it’s going to be an easy process, definitely. I’ve been working out now for two months, doing everything: wrestling, sparring … I’ve been throwing out stuff on social media to show that I am ready. You know, me hitting mitts, that was yesterday.”
In regards to his CBD Oil usage, and fans questioning whether or not the former champ is setting himself up to use his back injury as an excuse for his loss, Velasquez said the following:
“I’m not using it [CBD Oil] anymore. Just to get through the whole camp, I didn’t want to take any painkillers and be all jacked up and be an addict. I don’t want that for myself. All in all, the bottom line is, I’m ready to go. I’m ready to beat Werdum’s ass, and that’s it.”
