Tom Taylor - October 24, 2018
It’s been a long, long time since we’ve seen former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in the Octagon. Since July of 2016, to be exact. Considering Cain Velasquez is one of the best heavyweights in MMA history — arguably the sport’s best heavyweight outright — that’s a real shame.

Junior dos Santos interested in 4th fight with Cain Velasquez, questions former champ's whereabouts
Tom Taylor - August 24, 2018
Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos is once again in view of a heavyweight title shot, thanks to a nice decision win over Blagoy Ivanov in his last fight. And now that Daniel Cormier has defeated Stipe Miocic, who derailed dos Santos’s title dreams in 2017, the path to gold looks even clearer. In terms of his next fight, Junior dos Santos has a few options. One option is rising Australian contender Tai Tuivasa, who he’s gone back-and-forth with on Twitter. Another, he believes, is former champion Cain Velasquez, who he’s 1-2 with across three previous bouts.

Cain Velasquez "wouldn’t mind taking another belt" from Brock Lesnar
Tom Taylor - February 26, 2018
Last night, WWE returned to the screens of pro wrestling fans with its Elimination Chamber event. Amid the madness, former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey signed her WWE contract. That said, she wasn’t the only big UFC name on site. UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez were also in the building, taking in the mayhem from ringside. Cormier and Velasquez seemed to have a great time, so much so that Velasquez suggested he’d be interested in trying his hand at pro wrestling one day, where he could wrest another title from the waste of former UFC heavyweight champ and current WWE star Brock Lesnar.

Cain Velasquez discusses possible move to light heavyweight, gives timeframe for return
Tom Taylor - January 30, 2018
This July, at UFC 226, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will return to his former haunts – the heavyweight division – where he’ll take on reigning champ Stipe Miocic in an effort to become a two-division champ. While Cormier’s move to heavyweight would seem like it steps on the toes of his friend and training partner Cain Velasquez, Velasquez recently assured all was well in a Tweet. Like always, I’m gonna be in the gym everyday to help my brother @dc_mma become the next heavyweight champ at #UFC226. Once he wins, things could get interesting. #AndNew #WeAreAKA #GonnaGetMyBeltBack

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier’s next fight will not be in the light heavyweight division, but at heavyweight, where he will battle reigning heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic in an effort to become a two-division champion. Cormier’s taking a title shot at heavyweight, of course, would seem to step on the toes of his long-time friend and training partner, former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.

Cain Velasquez Issues a Very Interesting Statement on Daniel Cormier Fighting Stipe Miocic
Justin Golightly - January 27, 2018
In case you haven’t heard the news, maybe you need to sit down. UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is going to challenge Stipe Miocic for his UFC heavyweight belt in July after they coach a season of The Ultimate Fighter. We aren’t kidding. This is really happening. While this is insane, Cormier’s teammate Cain Velasquez may be hinting at something even crazier. Even the UFC’s official Twitter account was confused at what was going on. Either that, or they’re cleverly stirring the speculation pot. Like always, I’m gonna be in the gym everyday to help my brother @dc_mma become the next heavyweight champ at #UFC226. Once he wins, things could get interesting. #AndNew #WeAreAKA #GonnaGetMyBeltBack

Daniel Cormier Would Ask Special Permission to Fight Stipe Miocic
Justin Golightly - December 23, 2017
Francis Ngannou and Stipe Miocic will be decided who is the baddest man on the planet at UFC Boston, but if Daniel Cormier successfully defends his light heavyweight belt on the same card, he could move up and test that title as well. He was asked about going back to heavyweight for a giant fight to close out his career in a recent interview and said it’d be ‘the most amazing thing in the world.’ Not only that, but it seems like he’s thought about it a lot. His coach Javier Mendez opened up about the idea and thinks it could happen, with Cain Velasquez’s permission that is. “Yeah, [Daniel Cormier moving up to fight for the heavyweight title is] a fun theory too and it could be a realistic theory, and this is how it would work out if it did happen, okay. Cain [Velasquez] would talk to DC or DC would go to Cain, he’d go, ‘Hey, Cain, I wanna fight for the title against Stipe, do you have a problem for me going that one shot?’ And if Cain says yes, which I’m sure if that’s what they agreed on, then yeah, that would happen. That’s not far-fetched. It really isn’t, because that could be something that could happen. But it would be between DC and Cain, they would make that decision jointly together.”

Daniel Cormier wonders what Cain Velasquez could have accomplished without injuries
Tom Taylor - December 13, 2017
Cain Velasquez is one of the greatest heavyweights ever to compete in mixed martial arts. As a two-time former UFC heavyweight champion, and a fighter who has mauled top-flight opponents like Junior dos Santos (twice), Brock Lesnar, Ben Rothwell, Travis Browne, Cheick Kongo, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (twice), and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, there is simply no denying his status as one of the best heavyweights to ever do it. Unfortunately, Velasquez might also go down by one of the great what-ifs in MMA history, as an irrefutable top talent whose heyday was riddled with career-joggling injuries. Yes, as great as he is, it’s possible he’s already spent his best years on the on the sidelines. At least, that’s what his chief training partner Daniel Cormier seems to be worrying.

Tom Taylor - December 11, 2017
It has been a long, long time since we’ve seen former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in the cage. To be more precise, it’s been since he mauled Travis Browne to a first-round TKO in early July of 2016. The reason for Velasquez’s prolonged absence from the cage is his continued struggle with injury. After being forced out of a planned December 2016 rematch with former champion Fabricio Werdum, Velasquez underwent surgery, and has not been heard from much since.

Heated Cain Velasquez goes off on Jon Jones
Tom Taylor - October 24, 2017
Shortly after Jon Jones knocked out Daniel Cormier to reclaim the UFC light heavyweight title, it was announced that he had failed a pre-fight drug test. As a result, his knockout win was overturned and the light heavyweight strap was returned to Cormier. While Cormier is once again the champ, and Jones is facing a potentially career-ending suspension, Cormier’s training partner Cain Velasquez is still pretty displeased with the way things shook out. The former heavyweight champ went off on Jon Jones during a recent media appearance in Seoul, South Korea.

VIDEO | Cain Velasquez May Not Return This Year But For a Good Reason
Justin Golightly - September 7, 2017
Stipe Miocic has systematically taken out the best of the best: Mark Hunt, Andrei Arlovski, Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem, and Junior dos Santos. That’s a murderer’s row of murderer’s rows. As Miocic enjoys an incredible reign as the UFC heavyweight king, there is one fighter that he hasn’t been tested against. Former heavyweight champ, Cain Velasquez will have been out of competition for a whole year in two days. Hopeful fans had their fingers crossed that Miocic would defend against Velasquez this year, but unfortunately it seems like it won’t happen. “This year? Probably not. [Early next year], we’ll see. […] I’m close. I’m not there yet but I’m close. Focusing on this time as far as the baby we have coming along. I want to be there for that. He’s due in November, so it’s been a good process of healing and being with the family. I want to 100% ready for the fans. I need to stop messing around and coming back too early. You know what I mean? I can’t do that. I can’t afford that anymore. I gotta’ be 100% ready to come back. […] That’s not up to me [to get an immediate title shot]. I’ll ask for whoever. We haven’t talked. But I’m with the family and just recuperating still.” – Cain Velasquez to Ariel Helwani for UFC 215 media day.

Luke Rockhold hints that Cain Velasquez could return for title fight very soon
Tom Taylor - August 3, 2017
It has now been more than a year since Cain Velasquez’s last fight, a July 2016 mauling of the ever-dangerous Travis Browne. This, of course, is not for lack of trying. The former heavyweight champ was briefly scheduled for a December rematch with Fabricio Werdum, but unfortunately withdrew from this fight with the latest in the long string of injuries that has marred his recent career. For a time, it sounded as though it could be awhile before the oft-injured Velasquez stepped back into the cage. Apparently, however, he might be back in action quite soon.
