Chael Sonnen explains why Nick Diaz is bigger fight for Jorge Masvidal than Nate

Fernando Quiles Jr. - November 14, 2019

Chael Sonnen thinks Nick Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal will be an even bigger fight than “Gamebred” vs. Nate Diaz. Nick Diaz has made it clear that he doesn’t appreciate Masvidal’s use of the word “baptize” when describing what he wanted to do to his brother Nate. Diaz hinted at wanting a showdown with Masvidal inside AT&T Stadium after “Gamebred” defeated Nate via TKO at UFC 244. The Stockton native’s team later told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani that they want the fight for spring 2020.

Natasha Hooper - November 14, 2019

Chael Sonnen has fought Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, and Fedor Emelianenko — all fighters with claim to the title of Greatest of All Time. And while it’s not listed on his record, Sonnen claims he’s also fought another GOAT contender: Georges St-Pierre. The MMA analyst and former fighter is currently in Tel-Aviv, Israel for the upcoming Bellator 234 event. During his stay in Israel, Sonnen caught up with Bloody Elbow, and opened up on a “basement fight” that took place against St-Pierre.

Chael Sonnen intrigued by potential Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou bout

Fernando Quiles Jr. - November 11, 2019

Chael Sonnen wouldn’t be opposed to seeing Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou. Fury, who is recognized as the lineal boxing heavyweight champion, made some waves when he claimed he was speaking with Conor McGregor on potentially training for his MMA debut. Footage later surfaced of “The Gypsy King” training with UFC middleweight Darren Till. Fury and Ngannou have expressed interest in fighting one another. “The Predator” has said Mike Tyson has agreed to train him for a boxing match with Fury.

Should Ben Askren retire? UFC and Bellator vet Chael Sonnen weighs in

Fernando Quiles Jr. - October 31, 2019

Ben Askren’s fighting future will boil down to how “Funky” is feeling mentally, at least that’s what Chael Sonnen believes. Askren has dropped back-to-back bouts and was stopped in both outings. He suffered a record-setting knockout loss to Jorge Masvidal back in July and was choked out by Demian Maia at UFC Singapore. Askren recently admitted to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani that he is considering retirement.

Chael Sonnen: Jon Jones pulled 'scumbag move' taunting Chris Weidman

Fernando Quiles Jr. - October 22, 2019

Chael Sonnen believes Jon Jones was in the wrong for going after Chris Weidman following UFC Boston. Weidman moved up in weight to take on Dominick Reyes this past Friday night. The former UFC middleweight champion had expressed confidence in his ability to skip the line with a win and take on Jones. The “All-American” even said Jones has looked “beatable” as of late. In the end, Reyes stopped Weidman in the opening frame.

Chael Sonnen reacts to Michael Bisping's prosthetic eye

Fernando Quiles Jr. - October 7, 2019

Chael Sonnen has praised Michael Bisping’s toughness and ability to overcome adversity. Bisping surprised fight fans when he popped out his prosthetic eye during an edition of his Believe You Me podcast. For many, it was their first time knowing that Bisping had a fake eye. Back in Dec. 2018, “The Count” told Joe Rogan that he had a prosthetic eye after dealing with several issues stemming from a detached retina suffered in his 2013 bout with Vitor Belfort.

Chael Sonnen doubts Khabib Nurmagomedov ahead of UFC 242

Natasha Hooper - September 3, 2019

Speaking on his podcast this week, Chael Sonnen shared some doubts about Khabib Nurmagomedov ahead of the undisputed lightweight champion’s upcoming fight against interim champ Dustin Poirier at UFC 242. “He’s been out for a while,” Sonnen said of Nurmagomedov. “For Khabib, it was because of a suspension. For other guys, it was because of an injury or a contract dispute. But that always becomes a talking point ‘well how’s he gonna look, he’s been out, the other guy’s been busy, ring rust is a real thing’ For some reason, Khabib has penetrated the hearts and minds of the fans to the point that that dialogue is not even coming up. It’s as if this guy is bulletproof and we have fallen for that before.”

Chael Sonnen calls Nate Diaz an 'unintentional genius'

Fernando Quiles Jr. - August 28, 2019

If you ask Chael Sonnen, Nate Diaz is a genius — but it isn’t by design. Few are doubting Diaz’s star power following UFC 241. The Stockton native made his entrance to the roar of the crowd inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. On that night, UFC 241 broke a record with the largest gate for an MMA event in the state of California. Diaz defeated Anthony Pettis via unanimous decision and after the bout, UFC president Dana White admitted that Diaz is a “needle mover.”

Chael Sonnen praises 'stud' Nick Newell following Bellator 225

Mike Heck - August 26, 2019

Nick Newell made his Bellator MMA debut on Saturday and finished the fight quickly in front of his home crowd at Bellator 225. Newell hopes the win will lead to a long-term deal with the promotion, and if Chael Sonnen has anything to say about it, that may just be what happens. “Notorious” took on gritty Tennessee fighter Corey Browning on the featured preliminary bout at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. After a brief exchange on the feet, Newell took Browning down and patiently improved his position on the ground, leading to an arm triangle choke submission victory.

Chael Sonnen puts the UFC flyweight division on blast

Thomas Taylor - August 25, 2019

Chael Sonnen is not impressed by the fighters in the UFC flyweight division. Sonnen says that, after nearly finding itself on the chopping block, the UFC flyweight division was saved by its reigning champion Henry Cejudo, who helped renew interest in it. Unfortunately, Sonnen believes that the other fighters in the division have learned nothing from this experience.

Chael Sonnen says Daniel Cormier doesn't owe anyone an apology

Fernando Quiles Jr. - August 23, 2019

Chael Sonnen caught wind of Daniel Cormier’s statement following UFC 241. Cormier took on Stipe Miocic in a heavyweight title rematch. “DC” looked good in the early going, taking Miocic down and showing some solid top control. Miocic turned the tide in the standup, however. The Cleveland native was able to rip Cormier’s body and then nailed him upstairs for the fourth-round TKO victory.

Speaking on Chael Sonnen’s podcast after watching Nate Diaz defeat Anthony Pettis at UFC 241, St-Pierre offered some praise of the resurgent Stockton-based star.

Chael Sonnen: Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier will never be discussed again following UFC 241

Fernando Quiles Jr. - August 19, 2019

Chael Sonnen believes a third fight between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier is now out of the question. This past Saturday night (Aug. 17), Cormier and Stipe Miocic collided in a rematch for the UFC heavyweight title at UFC 241. While Cormier knocked out Miocic back in July 2018, the Cleveland native got his revenge. Miocic stopped Cormier in the fourth round via TKO to reclaim the heavyweight gold. Miocic became just the second man to defeat Cormier in MMA competition.

Chael Sonnen believes 'something great is going to happen for Jorge Masvidal'

Tom Taylor - August 6, 2019

When Jorge Masvidal knocked out Ben Askren in five seconds at UFC 239, he asserted himself as one of the uppermost contenders in the crowded UFC welterweight division. Unfortunately for Masvidal, it sounds as though his good friend and training partner Colby Covington will get the next crack at the reigning champ Kamaru Usman.  According to MMA analyst Chael Sonnen, however, there could be something big on the agenda for Jorge Masvidal — even if it’s not a title shot. Sonnen is adamant that a matchup between Masvidal and Conor McGregor is still a possibility, contrary to UFC President Dana White’s apparent disinterest in it.

Chael Sonnen explains what 'stupid' Jon Jones can learn from Max Holloway

Fernando Quiles Jr. - August 1, 2019

Chael Sonnen is critical of how Jon Jones handles questions on his game. Jones is hailed as the pound-for-pound best mixed martial arts fighter in the world, but Sonnen has been on “Bones'” case for his drawing ability. While Sonnen has ripped into Jones as he believes the UFC light heavyweight champion fails to capitalize on opportunities, Sonnen feels the complete opposite about Max Holloway.
