Chris Weidman reflects on win over Kelvin Gastelum in New York

This past weekend in New York, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman managed to snap a 3-fight losing streak as he picked up an impressive, and much needed, win over Kelvin Gastelum. The win was an impressive one for Weidman, who lost the middleweight title to Luke Rockhold at UFC 194, before then dropping two more KO/TKO losses at the hands of Yoel Romero and Gegard Mousasi.

The fight was Weidman’s third in his home-state of New York, however it was the first time he had been able to have his hand raised in front of his home-state fans. Weidman took to social media to reflect on what could potentially be the most memorable win of his career:

First off, I want to thank God for my life, my abilities and surrounding me with an amazing support system. Thank you to all of my family, friends, coaches and fans that have stood by me in the last 18 months. All of you have provided much needed fuel and reinforcement which allowed me to push forward, sometimes on blind faith. To my wife and kids, you guys mean the world to me, you absolutely keep me going! To be able to compete in Nassau Coliseum in my own backyard Saturday night in front of 10,000 + people and have the performance I did, in the situation I was in, was way beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you to everyone that came out to the Nassau Coliseum, whether you cheered me or booed me, you all helped create a amazing moment. I also want to send a shout out to Kelvin Gastelum, a class act and a true warrior – by any standard, Kelvin is a champion and, without question, is the future of the UFC.
