'Big' John McCarthy breaks down Chris Weidman - Gegard Mousasi controversy

bjpenndotcom - April 27, 2017

Recently, at UFC 210, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman stepped into the Octagon with Gegard Mousasi in hopes of snapping a 2-fight skid and returning to the win column. After going undefeated throughout his professional career, which included winning the UFC middleweight title, Weidman dropped back to back losses to Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero. While Weidman hoped to return to title contention with a win over Mousasi, it was Mousasi who walked away with the win, picking up a TKO win after Weidman was declared TKOd by referee Dan Miragliotta in what turned out to be an extremely controversial incident.

It’s now been several weeks since Chris Weidman’s controversial TKO loss to Gegard Mousasi, which marked his third-straight strike-induced loss in a row.  The controversy of this loss surrounded a strange choice by the referee, who first paused the action on the assumption that Mousasi landed an illegal knee, then called the fight when he realized the knee had been legal. On the latest edition of The MMA Hour, Weidman broke down this chaotic sequence, and his choice to appeal the outcome of the fight with the New York State Athletic Commission. His words (h/t MMAMania.com):

This past weekend at UFC 210, former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman stepped into the Octagon with Gegard Mousasi in hopes of snapping a 2-fight skid that had seen him lose the UFC middleweight title to Luke Rockhold in 2015 before then being viciously knocked out by Yoel Romero in November. In the fight with Mousasi, Weidman was declared TKO after a pair of controversial knees from Mousasi which ultimately ended up being legal despite Weidman believing that they were in fact illegal knees.

Last weekend, in the co-main event of UFC 210, Chris Weidman lost to Gegard Mousasi by second-round TKO. The circumstances of this TKO, however, were quite controversial. It began with Mousasi landing what appeared to be two illegal knees. From there, the action was stopped, as a swarm of confused officials and referees milled about the Octagon trying to decide how to proceed, while a dazed Weidman attempted to regroup. Ultimately, the knees were deemed legal, and the fight was waved off by referee Dan Miragliotta, much to the outrage of Weidman and his camp. Hence the TKO win for Mousasi.

Over the weekend, in the co-main event of UFC 210, Chris Weidman experienced a controversial TKO loss to Gegard Mousasi. The controversy followed a Mousasi knee, which at first appeared to be illegal – forcing a confusing pause in the action – but was ultimately deemed legal, resulting in a Mousasi win. Part of the reason the fight wasn’t allowed to continue after the knee was deemed legal is because Weidman couldn’t tell the referee what day it was. According to live audio of Weidman’s corner, however, this might not actually be a cause for concern.

Ray Longo explains what led to Chris Weidman's 2-fight skid

bjpenndotcom - April 4, 2017

At one point in time, UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman was considered one of the most dominant fighters on the UFC roster. Unfortunately for ‘The All American’ that changed in 2015, when he found himself knocked out by Luke Rockhold in the 4th round of their UFC 194 co-main event fight, which saw him lose the middleweight championship. Weidman was laid off on the sidelines for nearly a year with injuries before he returned to the Octagon in November at UFC 205 in New York. In that fight, the former champ looked to return to the win column in hopes of moving one step closer towards a shot at reclaiming the UFC title. Unfortunately for Weidman, he suffered the second straight defeat of his professional career, this time at the hands of Yoel Romero, who finished Weidman with a beautiful flying knee.

Chris Taylor - April 2, 2017

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is 100% certain that a boxing match between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is going to happen. “So Mayweather and McGregor is going to happen. 100 percent. That’s a fact,” Weidman told Mike ‘Gunz’ Gunzelman in a recent interview (as transcribed by MMAMania. “I was just like everybody else. I thought it was a joke of a fight. Obviously McGregor has no chance in that fight. But everyone’s still going to pay to watch it because it’s Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is going to talk. He’s going to say things to Floyd Mayweather that no one has ever said to him before. He’s going to have Floyd Mayweather’s head spinning. It’s going to be insane. It’s going to be an amazing event.”

For a time, Chris Weidman looked like he was going to be come a truly dominant champion. First, he knocked out Anderson Silva to win the UFC middleweight title. Then, he defeated Silva again – albeit thanks to a freakish leg injury – erasing any doubt that he deserved his station atop the middleweight division. Next, he defeated Lyoto Machida in a thrilling, five-round war. And finally, he took out a bona fide MMA legend in Vitor Belfort, marking his third-straight defense of the middleweight title. Indeed, it looked like it could be the beginning of a legendary reign for the talented American star.
