VIDEO | Chris Weidman Gives Update on Injury and Possible Return
“The thumb is…it’s healing slow, man. It was definitely a serious injury. This is the scar right now, check that out. *shows scar* Seven inches? I don’t know. Basically they took a tendon out of my wrist and used that to create a new ligament in the base of my thumb. I’m actually starting to hit the bag a little bit now, but grabbing and wrestling is still painful…it’s weak still so i’m just trying to push through it.
I’m hoping maybe the next month that the sharp pain starts going away and I can get a fight scheduled. I mean listen, I don’t know.” Weidman answered when asked if UFC 223 in Brooklyn could be a possibility. “I feel like sometimes with injuries like this, overnight it just is better. Right now it’s not but it could be tomorrow or it could be a month from now so I don’t know.
Whoever brings me to that title shot.” Weidman stated when questioned who he may want upon his return, “The weight class is interesting right now so if there’s an opportunity for me to fight for the belt i’m ready to do it, If there’s other guy’s that I have to fight before that we’ll do that too.”
Former UFC Middleweight champion, Chris Weidman is in Boston, Massachusetts to help corner and coach his teammate and best friend, Gian Villante on Saturday at UFC 220 when he takes on Francimar Barroso.
For the former champ, Weidman, his last fight came at UFC on Fox 25 against Kelvin Gastelum back in July. This fight was critical for the former champion as another loss would have made it four in a row. But no problem, Weidman snapped his streak with a third-round submission over the highly touted young star, Gastelum and looks to keep the momentum rolling when he returns.
Who would you like to see Weidman face when he returns?
