BREAKING | Tito Ortiz vs Chuck Liddell 3 official for November 24
It’s officially happening, everybody. The trilogy that we never expected to come to a ‘conclusion’ will be doing just that in a few months.
We knew that the third meeting between MMA legends and former UFC light heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell was in the works but now…we know when it’s going down.
ESPN has confirmed that Ortiz vs Liddell 3 will take place on November 24 under the Oscar De La Hoya led Golden Boy Promotions for their first ever MMA event. The fight will take place in Inglewood, California at The Forum and be shown on pay-per-view (price yet to be revealed.
De La Hoya commented when speaking with ESPN.
“I’m excited for our first Golden Boy MMA event. It reminds me of the first-ever fight I did in boxing [in 2002]. I’m going to see how this one goes, but just the way I did in boxing, I plan on becoming a regular promoter of MMA. There’s no reason I should only promote one sport.
I strongly feel MMA fighters are going to be pleased with the fact I’m entering the sport. Hopefully, we will sign some great fighters and go from there.
I’m becoming a promoter in MMA for the same reason I became a promoter in boxing. I’m sick and tired of these fighters coming up to me and saying they get paid crap.
I can’t get into the specifics of these deals, but I’ll tell you that [Liddell and Ortiz] will be making a hell of a lot more money than they have with anybody else. They’ll participate in revenue from PPV, gate and everything else that comes in. This will be the most lucrative fight of their careers.”
For ‘The Iceman’, this will be his very first fight since retiring in 2010 after a third straight knockout loss to Rich Franklin at UFC 215. He currently leads the rivalry with Ortiz 2-0.
Most recently having fought for Bellator, Ortiz retired a lot later as he hasn’t fought since January 2017 when he scored a first-round submission over Chael Sonnen.
Despite the two both being as seasoned as it gets at the ages of 43 for Ortiz and 48 for Liddell, De La Hoya doesn’t think it was too late for this fight to be happening.
“Obviously, both guys are warriors and pioneers. It’s like Floyd Mayweather vs. [Manny Pacquiao, in 2015]. People were asking for that fight for the longest time. It finally happened and it broke records.
I think this fight will be very lucrative for both guys. This is an opportunity for them to show the world they still have what it takes to fight in the Octagon. I strongly feel it’s never too late with two guys like this. Two names of this caliber, you can’t go wrong.”
