Coach Duke Roufus says UFC matchmakers going over CM Punk’s next fight

It has been over one year since Phil Brooks, better known as CM Punk made his Octagon debut. It wasn’t the outcome Punk or his coach Duke Roufus was hoping for, but it did serve as experience as the former WWE star’s first professional MMA fight.

Now, a little over a year since his debut and with more training under his belt, there are talks of Brooks getting his second UFC fight, according to Roufus.

“(UFC President Dana White) and the matchmakers had their weekly matchmaking meeting yesterday, and we’ll get some news soon,” Roufus recently said on “UFC Unfiltered” podcast (transcribed by Mike Bohn for MMA Junkie). “I just think the first time you step in the octagon, there’s something special you’ve got to deal with getting in there. For Punk, this sounds really weird, but now he knows what a beating feels like – a real beating.”

Although the talks for Punk’s second UFC fight are still up in the air, Roufus said that with the experience of his first fight and all the training done since then, it will all add up to bring a more polished fighter to the Octagon.

“I think (a loss like Punk’s at UFC 203) will help a lot of fighters to the point of haunting them, like, ‘No, I don’t want to feel this way ever again,’” Roufus said. “It’s not the physical. These guys are tough. It’s the mental anguish. You don’t want to feel that depressing, embarrassing feeling of getting beat up in front of God and everyone. It’s no fun. It’s been great motivation for him.”
