Last weekend, on the main card of UFC 203, former pro wrestling star CM Punk took his first steps into the cage and was quickly submitted by Mickey Gall in an outcome that surprised very few people. Despite his loss, many members of the combat sports community have commended Punk on his courage and ambition. Though he was clearly not ready for a UFC bout, there seems to be a widespread admiration for the way he got in there and chased his dreams.

Former Bellator champion and current UFC lightweight ‘Ill’ Will Brooks may be one of the few fighters actually defending CM Punk’s massive payday at UFC 203 on Saturday. Phil Brooks, better known as CM Punk, took home $500,000 in disclosed pay in a losing effort to Mickey Gall, who submitted the former WWE superstar in a little over two minutes. Many fighters took to Twitter to vent their frustrations in the pay disparity, considering Punk’s victorious opponent earned a meager $30,000 in comparison to Punk’s half a million dollar payday.

Last night, the UFC took over Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena with UFC 203. Though UFC 203 was headlined by a heavyweight title fight between champion Stipe Miocic and challenger Alistair Overeem, the event was perhaps most anticipated for the MMA debut of WWE star CM Punk, who took on 24-year-old prospect Mickey Gall on the evening’s main card. Given the fact that Punk possessed no real martial arts experience before signing with the UFC, very few people gave him a chance in his bout with Gall. The expectation was that the former pro wrestler would be dominated by his young foe, and when the cage door closed in Cleveland, that’s precisely what happened.

On the main card of UFC 203, Mickey Gall and CM Punk had their long-awaited fight inside the Octagon. Punk, who was signed to the UFC in 2014, was all smiles during his walkout as he high fived fans. When the fight started, it was all Gall as he took CM Punk down in just seconds. Gall began to reign down shots as Punk established his guard. Ultimately, Gall’s experience paid off as he was able to secure a 1st round submission win over Punk.
