Cody Garbrandt on Dominick Cruz: His Fighting Style is Really What Made Me Not Like Him
It’s no secret that UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and streaking contender Cody Garbrandt don’t like each other. The two fighters have been swapping barbs for months – so much so, in fact, that it’s starting to look like contenders like TJ Dillashaw, Bryan Caraway and Jimmie Rivera will be skipped over to book a Cruz vs. Garbrandt grudge match.
Today, the trend of trash talk continued, as Garbrandt slammed Cruz in an interview with TMZ.
In the interview, Garbrandt was asked why he doesn’t like the reigning champion, and explained that the main reason is his fighting style.
“It’s his fighting style,” he said. “I’ve been focusing on fighting him since I was a teenager, so his fighting style is really what made me not like him. I’m a real fighter. I go out and get the finishes, he goes out and skates by on decisions.”
Now that the pair has exchanged so much trash talk, however, Garbrandt says things have become personal. The undefeated star took particular with Cruz’s assertion that he has “daddy issues.”
“Now it’s become personal with him bringing stuff up in the media about daddy issues and this and that,” he said. “He’s the one with all those insecurities so he wants to shed light on my father being in prison or my father not being there, coming from a broken home. We’re cut from the same cloth. He comes from a single mother. He’s had a couple interviews where he says his mother says Christmas is weak cause his father wasn’t there.”
At the end of the day, however, Garbrandt says he doesn’t care about the trash talking. His only goal is beating Cruz up when they fight.
“I’m gonna make every word he said and he spoke badly about me, and I hope that’s in December. I’m ready to dethrone the pound-for-pound, bantamweight king as he’s pegged and humble him. I’m ready to humble him.”
Do you think all this trash talk will result in a Cruz vs. Garbrandt fight being made? If it does, who do you think wins? Sound off, PENN nation!
