2016 couldn’t have started better for Dominick Cruz. In January, he returned from years on the injury list to reclaim the UFC bantamweight title from TJ Dillashaw. Then, in June, he defended that title against on old rival in Urijah Faber. Unfortunately, however, Cruz failed to end 2016 on the high note with which he began it.

Cody Garbrandt closed out 2016 in the biggest way possible, defeating Dominick Cruz by unanimous decision to claim the UFC bantamweight throne. With this title-grabbing win, Garbrandt now looks ahead to his first challenge as the bantamweight king. Logic suggests that challenge would be provided by his former training partner TJ Dillashaw, a former champion on a solid, two-fight win-streak. Recently, however, the new champion set his sights on featherweight battles that he deems to be more lucrative, mentioning Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor as possible opponents.

One of the biggest moments of UFC 207, the UFC’s final card of the year 2016, was Cody Garbrandt’s title-winning defeat of Dominick Cruz. Garbrandt earned this victory with a lopsided unanimous decision in a performance that would become a late entrant into the 2016 Upset of the Year debate.

While the feud between Team Alpha Male (TAM) and former TAM member TJ Dillashaw has been a very public one, the Cody Garbrandt-TJ Dillashaw feud was reignited at the end of 2016 when undefeated TAM prospect Cody Garbrandt was gearing up for his UFC 207 showdown with Dominick Cruz, and Dillashaw was gearing up for his bantamweight #1 contender fight with John Lineker, which took place at the same event. While the possibility of both men emerging from their fights victorious and fighting one another for the bantamweight championship was certainly a possibility in the minds of fight fans, Dillashaw was one step ahead, already looking to potential set up a potential fight with his former teammate when just hours before the event was set to kick off, he revealed on social media that he had made ‘No Love’ cry during practices at TAM. Garbrandt fired back, hours before his title fight with Cruz, dropping a bombshell as he proclaimed that TAM coach Justin Buchholz had footage of himself knocking Dillashaw out in training. Dillashaw of course refuted the claims, which resulted in a back-and-forth war of words between the two men. Following Garbrandt’s masterful win over Cruz, and Dillashaw’s dominant win over Lineker, the two men have continued to trade shots on social media.

Leading up to UFC 207, the feud between former Team Alpha Male teammates Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw was reignited as the two men, who were both fighting on the UFC 207 card, took to social media to rekindle an old feud just hours before their scheduled scraps on pay-per view. Dillashaw took to social media to take some verbal jabs at the challenger, mocking him by saying that he made ‘No Love’ cry during practice when they were teammates. Despite the fact that he had the biggest fight of his life coming up in just a few hours, Garbrandt was quick to fire back, stating that his coach Justin Buchholz had footage of Garbrandt knocking out Dillashaw in training.

Last Friday, on the main card of UFC 207, TJ Dillashaw coach Duane Ludwig watched his star pupil score a lopsided win over John Lineker, the bantamweight division’s number-two ranked fighter. Logic would suggest that with this win, Dillashaw guaranteed himself at the UFC bantamweight title he once owned, which is now held by Cody Garbrandt. The widely applauded TJ Dillashaw coach, however, isn’t sure what the future holds. While he hopes his fighter will get the next shot at gold, he is far from trusting of the UFC’s current matchmaking strategy.

After his UFC 207 defeat of Dominick Cruz, new UFC bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt claimed that he’d like to fight current featherweight champ Jose Aldo next. Given that Garbrandt’s fighting Aldo would deprive TJ Dillashaw of the bantamweight title shot he’s so clearly earned, this assertion was met with some criticism. Luckily for Dillashaw, Garbrandt has backtracked a bit, saying he’d happily defend the title against him.

In one of the final UFC scraps of 2016, undefeated bantamweight fighter Cody Garbrandt put on the performance of a lifetime as he picked apart Dominick Cruz over the course of five rounds to secure the UFC bantamweight championship. In addition to picking Cruz apart, Garbrandt landed several big punches on Cruz that sent the champ to the canvas dazed and confused. Following the fight, Garbrandt presented his friend Maddux Maple with the UFC bantamweight championship belt, many years after he promised his young friend that he would win the UFC championship belt for him, if he beat Leukemia for Garbrandt. While Garbrandt’s performance in the fight was certainly a big moment from the night, it was Garbrandt giving Maple the bantamweight championship belt that really left a lasting impression on the MMA community.

To close out 2016, undefeated Team Alpha Male prospect Cody Garbrandt put on the performance of a lifetime as he not only defeated former bantamweight kingpin Dominick Cruz, but picked ‘The Dominator’ apart over the course of five rounds, even rocking Cruz several times throughout the fight. Leading up to the fight, Garbrandt stated several times that he would be happy to give Cruz a rematch when he emerged from UFC 207 victorious. In addition however, leading up to UFC 207, Garbrandt and former teammate TJ Dillashaw exchanged barbs. With both men emerging from their respective UFC 207 fights victorious, many believe the stage had been set for a fight between the two former teammates.

With title fights in two divisions, and appearances from a handful of ranked fighters, UFC 207 was a big card for the official UFC rankings. Now that the card is in the rear view mirror, the promotion has updated its rankings, and there has been significant movement in several divisions. Perhaps the most notable change is Cody Garbrandt’s entrance onto the pound-for-pound list, which followed his bantamweight title winning defeat of pound-for-pound stalwart Dominick Cruz. He now holds the number-five spot on the list, while Cruz dropped five spots to number eight. Unsurprisingly, Garbrandt also usurped the top spot in the bantamweight division’s rankings.

Last Friday, in the co-main event of UFC 207, Cody Garbrandt put forth a masterful performance, swiping the bantamweight title from the waist of Dominick Cruz with a clear-cut unanimous decision win. With this win, logic would suggest that Garbrandt will now set his sights on top contender TJ Dillashaw, or even on a rematch with Cruz. Apparently, however, the new champ has his sites set on “money fight” with reigning featherweight king Jose Aldo. Garbrandt made this admission on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour.

Last Friday, in the co-main event of UFC 207, undefeated 25-year-old Cody Garbrandt delivered a shocking upset, capturing a unanimous decision over Dominick Cruz to win the UFC bantamweight crown. As the new champion, Garbrandt must now set his sights on the many dangerous contenders in the bantamweight division – none of whom are more deserving of the next shot than his former training partner TJ Dillashaw. Dillashaw, who lost the belt to Cruz in January, has since rebounded with dominant wins over two top-flight foes. The first of these wins saw him take out a former foil in Raphael Assuncao in July. The second occurred just moments before Garbrandt’s defeat of Cruz, when he scored a unanimous decision win over the absurdly powerful John Lineker.
