After altercation with Covington, Abdelaziz says Kamaru Usman will fight Ben Askren next

Shortly after Kamaru Usman defeated Tyron Woodley to capture the UFC welterweight belt at UFC 235, he and his manager Ali Abdelaziz got into a heated altercation with former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington (see the video here). While UFC President Dana White has been adamant that the first shot at the new UFC welterweight champ Usman will go to Covington, Abdelaziz is now calling for a fight between Usman and Ben Askren, who defeated Robbie Lawler on the UFC 235 main card.

New UFC welterweight champ Kamaru Usman and former interim champion Colby Covington have an extremely heated rivalry. So heated in fact, that they nearly came to blows inside a casino in Las Vegas on Sunday. In fact, punches were actually thrown in this heated encounter — though not by either fighter. Instead, it was Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz who let loose a strike. Usman even seemed to be holding his manager back.

Kamaru Usman did not let his UFC 235 welterweight title shot go to waste. For five rounds, the streaking challenger took the fight to the long-time champion Tyron Woodley, ultimately earning a unanimous decision win — and the belt — as a result. Now that he’s the champion, Usman would seem to have a plethora of options for his first title defense. There’s a potential rematch with Woodley. There’s a showdown with fellow wrestling standout Ben Askren. And of course, there’s a grudge match with Colby Covington.

Colby Covington has arrived in Las Vegas to take in the UFC 235 card — particularly the co-headlining welterweight title fight between his rivals Tyron Woodley and Kamaru Usman. Since arriving in Sin City, Covington has definitely made his presence known. He crashed Usman’s open workout… he harassed UFC President Dana White at blackjack table… he even threatened to destroy the UFC’s boss’s car.

When Colby Covington defeated Rafael dos Anjos to win the interim welterweight title in June of 2018, he was promised a shot at undisputed champion Tyron Woodley.
