Coach discusses Conor McGregor’s future after Khabib Nurmagomedov fight

On October 6, in the main event of UFC 229, former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor will return to the Octagon for a blockbuster showdown with undefeated UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. What the future holds for McGregor after this fight, however, is quite difficult to say.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Eurobash podcast, Conor McGregor’s coach Owen Roddy discussed the Irish star’s fighting future, and whether he might retire after battling Nurmagomedov.

“I don’t know…I don’t think [he will retire],” Roddy told Peter Carroll of Conor McGregor on the podcast (transcript via MMA Fighting). “I don’t look into the future to see what’s happening. Conor’s mentality hasn’t changed at all, so I don’t know.”

In Roddy’s eyes, Conor McGregor’s future in MMA will, as always, be determined by the availability of fights that interest him.

“I always say, it depends on what fights are available, I think, for Conor,” he said. “As I said, if there is another big super fight and Conor feels like he would enjoy it, then he’ll do it. If the fans want it and stuff like that, I think Conor will take it.”

“You never know, who knows? We’re just going to focus on the task at hand now. This is potentially the biggest fight ever. We’ll go in and do that and then he’ll probably be on to the next biggest fight ever.”

In terms of fights after Khabib Nurmagomedov, it’s hard to say what might interest Conor McGregor. A tie-breaking trilogy fight with Nate Diaz, however, would probably spark his interest. So too might a clash with former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre, who has recently discussed a potential move down to the 155-pound lightweight division that Conor McGregor currently inhabits.
