Coach John Kavanagh says a ‘scary combination’ is creating an entirely new Conor McGregor
UFC superstar Conor McGregor has a lot on the line in his rematch against the UFC’s bad boy from Stockton, Nate Diaz.
McGregor suffered the first loss of his UFC career against Diaz in their first meeting at UFC 196 and if a second loss in a row were to occur, the “it” factor of “The Notorious” may very well begin to wilt away.
Going into the critical rematch, McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh, spoke on ESPN’s Five Rounds podcast and revealed some of the differences with this camp for the rematch versus previous fight camps for “The Notorious.”
“If I was to sum it up, there’s order to this training camp,” Kavanagh said (transcribed by ESPN). “There’s no chaos. Everything is very disciplined, very military style. Beforehand, it was kind of done on Conor’s whim, how he felt on a certain day.
“This training camp has been based on cycles. Every day, we start at 1 p.m. sharp. In the evenings, we do cardio training. Everything is measured, nothing is left to ‘How you feeling?’ We have a performance doctor taking care of the performance side of things, I’m taking care of the fighting side of things, everybody is working together and nothing we’ve done before comes close to comparison for this one.”
Kavanagh said that he believes the loss to Diaz will end up being a positive thing in Mcgregor’s career by showing the UFC featherweight champion’s discipline and work ethic after tasting defeat. Kavanagh also says that he has already seen improvements in leaps and bounds ahead of the rematch with Diaz.
“The last couple of weeks there has been a real level of growth to what he has been able to do. Now, he really is a truly elite athlete. He has always been an incredible fighter, but now, training like a true Olympian-style champion — for me, that’s a scary combination.”
