Coach updates on timing of Conor McGregor’s comeback, potential opponents

By Tom Taylor - April 25, 2018

When Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Al Iaquinta in the main event of UFC 223, it meant that Conor McGregor was no longer the UFC lightweight champion. Ever since, we’ve all been eager to see what the future holds for the Irish star, and whether he might soon  attempt to reclaim his former title from the new champ Nurmagomedov.

Speaking to Chisanga Malata of Express Sport earlier this week, McGregor’s striking coach Owen Roddy updated on McGregor’s potential comeback. Despite the fact that Nurmagomedov recently stated preliminary talks had begun for a potential showdown with McGregor, Roddy says there’s still no movement on McGregor’s next bout.

“There’s no indication of who [the opponent] will be,” Roddy told Express Sport. “But it doesn’t really matter, to be honest.”

“I’ve said this before: The draw is Conor,” Roddy continued. “The opponent is just somebody there to go in against him. Just to have him back in the cage, I think that’s more important than anything else. He’s training, he’s looking good.”

While there apparently haven’t been any real negotiations for a McGregor-Nurmagomedov bout just yet, Roddy seems to believe Nurmagomedov could win the McGregor sweepstakes. It will all come down to who represents the most lucrative option for the Irish star.

“It’s whatever fight makes sense,” Roddy said. “The biggest draw will get the chance to fight Conor.”

Whatever the case, Roddy assures McGregor wants to return to the UFC, and he believes the former champ will be welcomed back with open arms.

“We can’t really talk about when he wants to return,” Roddy said. “But he’s adamant he’s getting back. But for me, the sooner [he’s back] the better. The UFC is really missing Conor, I believe. And I think everybody is missing the whole extravaganza of a Conor McGregor fight. There’s nothing like it in the world.”
