Conor McGregor hints at plans for future boxing-MMA hybrid sport

By Tom Taylor - August 24, 2017

This Saturday, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will take his first steps into the professional boxing arena. His opponent for this boxing debut will be Floyd Mayweather, the greatest boxer of this generation and one of the greatest ever period.

Win or lose, McGregor will make more money for this blockbuster battle than he ever has as a mixed martial artist. As such, there’s been widespread doubt that he’ll ever return to the UFC’s Octagon after Saturday night.

At the same time, we know that McGregor is a voracious competitor, and a true martial artist. As such, there is an expectation that he’ll eventually be pulled back to the UFC, not for money, but for challenging fights with rivals like Nate Diaz and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Speaking to the media at a Wednesday press conference, McGregor addressed his fighting future, and strangely, eluded to some sort of boxing-MMA hybrid sport where he could take on all comers.

“After I get a victory on Saturday night, I would most certainly be open to competing in both sports,” McGregor said (h/t CBSSports).”Maybe going forward, since I’m the king of the boxing ring and the king of the Octagon already, once I’ve conquered both, maybe I’ll just create my own hybrid of an Octagon and a boxing ring. I’m an active fighter. I enjoy it. I don’t stop thinking about fighting. Most certainly when this one is done, I’ll have 20 seconds when I relish in victory. Then I’ll be like, ‘Who’s next?’ I just turned 29 years of age. I’m still very young in my career. I’m still looking to compete all over the place.”
