Conor McGregor sees Tyron Woodley, GSP, others as potential fights after UFC 229
This Saturday night, in the main event of UFC 229, Conor McGregor will step into the Octagon for the first time since November of 2016, where he will battle the undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC lightweight title.
If you thought this comeback fight was a one-off deal for Conor McGregor, think again. The Irish MMA star just signed a new six-fight deal with the UFC, and from the sounds of it, he plans to honor at least some of those obligations.
Speaking to The Mac Life this week, McGregor discussed who he might fight next, should he successfully topple Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.
Apparently, he considers top lightweight contender Dustin Poirier an option. He’s also interested in a trilogy fight with Poirier’s upcoming opponent Nate Diaz, and in fights with UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and former welterweight and middleweight champ Georges St-Pierre.
”I’m already mapping out what’s next in my head,” Conor McGregor said (transcript via MMA Mania). “I know Dustin and Nate is competing. I know the 170 pound belt has also just been defended and I know Tyron, the current welterweight champion, is itching for that one. Like they all fookin’ are. I know Georges is in there test cutting to 155. I know everyone’s around looking for it. So I’m here and I’m ready so let’s see what happens. I’ve got my eye on everyone.”
Conor McGregor also discussed Tony Ferguson and Anthony Pettis, who battle in the UFC 229 co-main event, and are seen as the logical understudies should McGregor or Nurmagomedov not show up to the fight.
”When that fight got announced as co-main, I was like man, if Khabib bottles this fight — like he has bottled many fights before — if he bottles this one, I don’t think I give a fuck about… no disrespect to those other two, I don’t think I give a f**k about those other two,” McGregor said. “To step in … I think I would probably have just disappeared back into the shadows and got that man [Khabib] somewhere else outside of here.”
”But now that I’m here and I’m back and I’m close, I think if he didn’t show up, I think I would take a fight against either one of those.”
Who do you think we’ll see Conor McGregor fight next if he wins at UFC 229?
