Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh: ‘Eddie Alvarez is going to have his moments’

By Russell Ess - October 24, 2016

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has his chance to make history on November 12 at Madison Square Garden in the main event of UFC 205. The Irish superstar has the chance to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two UFC division’s titles simultaneously but it will be no walk in the park.

“The Notorious” will have to stamp his name in the history books on this accomplishment by beating UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

McGregor’s coach recently spoke with the Independent.ie about the opponent, Alvarez, and what he brings to the fight against McGregor.

“The Eddie Alvarez fight is a lot more of the standard that we’re used to,” Kavanagh said. “He fights with a traditional stance and he’s very similar to a bunch of guys that Conor has already beat.

“Diaz was the anomaly, a bit of blip that had to be trained in a certain way for but I think the Eddie fight will be a return to our more traditional style of training,” said Kavanagh of McGregor’s last training camp tailored to fight Diaz, who is a tall, long, southpaw.

“There will be pressure in this fight, I have no doubt there will be times where Conor is feeling that pressure and is getting pinned up against the fence. It’s a fight at the end of the day and Eddie is a UFC champion and he is it for a reason.

“He’s been around this sport for a long, long time and as I say we’re hoping for the best but we’re preparing for the worst so we’re ready for a tough 25 minutes.”

As far as what Kavanagh’s prediction is for the fight, the Irishman says that he doesn’t see the fight going the distance.

“I’d be very surprised if it goes the full 25 minutes but I’m sure Eddie is going to have his moments, that’s how fights are, but ultimately I have absolutely no doubt that Conor’s hand will be raised.”
