Dana White gives update on Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match
Since Conor McGregor was pulled from UFC 200 in April for refusing to fulfill his media obligations, there have been talks of the Irish superstar making the jump to boxing to compete against undefeated boxing icon Floyd Mayweather. While at that time talks progressed to the point that Colin Cowherd even announced the targeted date for the bout, the fight never materialized.
Now, on the heels of McGregor’s UFC 205 win over Eddie Alvarez last month, which saw ‘Notorious’ claim the UFC lightweight championship and become the first ever simultaneous two-division UFC champion when he picked up a second round TKO win over Alvarez, talks of a McGregor-Mayweather boxing match have once again picked up steam.
With both men reportedly interested in the fight, one could believe that the fight could finally happen. According to UFC President Dana White however, that isn’t the case.
He spoke on UFC Unfiltered:
“He is not fighting Floyd Mayweather. Floyd Mayweather isn’t going to fight him. It’s never going to happen,”
“If you look at the any fight anybody has ever talked about at the time was Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. Look how long it took for that fight to be made. Those guys were in the same sport.”
“I’m not taking anything away from Floyd. Listen, no matter what you are doing, the timing, whatever it is, to go undefeated for 20 years, it is a huge feat. It’s incredible.” he explained.
“Floyd is been perfect in fighting right guys at the right time. He isn’t going to get in there and mix it up with Conor.”
“Knowing what you know about Conor, just from what you seen, without even knowing him personally, do you think that if he and Floyd get into the ring and mixing it up, Conor McGregor might hit him with a spinning back kick to the body? Even if it was pure boxing, doesn’t mean he cannot throw a kick.”
Do you think the boxing match will ever happen, and if so, how do you think McGregor would do in a boxing ring with Mayweather?
