Former boxing champion rips Conor McGregor for Floyd Mayweather comments

Since UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 last month to win the lightweight championship, talks of a potential Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match have continued to pick up steam.

While McGregor will be sidelined until May with the upcoming birth of his child, talks of a McGregor-Mayweather boxing match currently have combat sports fans in an uproar. While some think a superfight between the two is a great idea for combat sports, others believe that given the fact that the two men compete in different sports, a fight should never take place.

Regardless, McGregor was recently issued a boxing license in California. Following that announcement, McGregor stated in an interview that he would be looking to knock Floyd Mayweather out in a potential fight. In addition, he stated that while The Money Team is ‘scrambling’ following the announcement of the Irish superstar being issued a boxing license in California, he would be looking for other boxing matches.

Former boxing champion Michael ‘The Great’ Katsidis spoke to Gold Coast Bulletin to fire shots at McGregor over his comments:

“You have just disrespected the entire sport to challenge the pound-for-pound best,” Katsidis said via the Gold Coast Bulletin. “I respected Conor for being a superior athlete in his field. After the way he has disrespected the boxers in my sport, I have absolutely no respect for the man.

“McGregor has stepped from the octagon and wants to step it up a lot of notches and come into the ring. Well that’s my territory, my weight and my belts and titles he would be after.”

“His manager has said have the right people call. I am the right person and I’m calling. McGregor is spruiking two belts in two weight divisions, he stood in the ring demanding his new belt be brought to him – I want to see if he can come take one of mine.”

“If McGregor ‘The Notorious’ wants to come into my sport, let’s see how he goes coming up against ‘The Great.’”

Katsidis is certainly no joke in the boxing world. With a professional record of 31-7, which includes 24 KO wins, that has seen Katsidis capture the WBU light-welterweight title, the WBO interim lightweight title, and the Australian light-welterweight title to name just a few, he could very well be a potential opponent for McGregor’s boxing debut.
