VIDEO | Frank Mir worries Conor McGregor is undoing the work of Liddell, Couture, other MMA legends
Pretty much everybody has an opinion on Conor McGregor‘s recent rampage in Brooklyn, during which the Irish star infamously threw a dolly through the window of the UFC 223 fighter bus, injuring several fighters set to compete on the card.
As it turns out, former UFC heavyweight champ and current Bellator MMA star Frank Mir has one of the most interesting opinions of the bunch when it comes to this McGregor debacle.
Speaking to FanSided MMA this week, Mir explained that he thinks McGregor’s impromptu trip to Brooklyn — which is believed to have been inspired by Khabib Nurmagomedov’s confrontation with Artem Lobov — could have been a good thing.
“I think it started out as a good idea… Conor jumping on a plane, flying down here because Khabib put his hand on Artem,” Mir said. “If Conor had just walked walked inside that press conference and had a shouting match with Khabib, you know, [saying] ‘I’m here to fight you now, who’s afraid now, I’ll make weight, wheres’ the scale?’ Obviously the commission’s not going to sanction it, but that would have been a great tease, a great bite. Nobody would have gotten hurt, nobody would have gotten sued.”
Regrettably McGregor’s trip to Brooklyn spun out of control, and Mir worries the resulting bedlam could set the sport of MMA back decades.
“Seeing Conor do that, on a personal note, it bugs me,” said Mir. “Cause I’m like, damn it man, the guys like me, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Matt Hughes, we fought for years to not be considered a thug. And now, you’re going to drag us back in because you’re the most famous guy in our sport, the richest guy, the most famous character.”
“Just like all people do, [people are] going to judge [MMA] by our most notable face.”
