Frankie Edgar’s bold prediction ahead of UFC 200

Earlier this week it was announced by the UFC that Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz would have their highly anticipated welterweight rematch at UFC 200. In addition it was announced that Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo would be competing for the interim featherweight championship.

Following McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 196, McGregor stated that he would likely go back down to featherweight to defend his championship. This lead to much confusion when the UFC booked McGregor vs. Diaz II at UFC 200, rather than a featherweight title defense for McGregor.

Ahead of the rematch on July 9th, Frankie Edgar was asked whether or not he believes McGregor will ever return to featherweight to defend his championship after his rematch with Nate Diaz.

He spoke to Fox Sports:

“I don’t know. I don’t think so,” Edgar said about McGregor returning to featherweight. “I don’t know if a win will make him come back, maybe a loss he’d have to come back. Two losses in a row that’s supposedly up two weight classes — it’s 155-pounders not wanting to cut weight is what it really is. He’ll lose a lot of that value I think.

“The more losses you tack on — you’re going to have a champion come back after a two-loss stint up a weight class? It just doesn’t all add up to me.”
