Freddie Roach: Georges St-Pierre wants Conor McGregor fight
Earlier this year, news surfaced that former UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre would be returning to the Octagon this year to fight UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping in a highly anticipated showdown for Bisping’s middleweight title. While no official date for the fight was set, UFC President Dana White confirmed that the two men would fight this year.
Since then however, despite Georges St-Pierre and Bisping doing a press conference together, no official date has bene given for the fight. As a result, Bisping has now threatened to take away GSP’s title shot and give it to Yoel Romero. Following Bisping’s consideration of offering the fight to Romero, UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley called for the fight against Bisping.
Now, in a new interview with Fight Hub TV, St-Pierre’s boxing trainer, famed coach Freddie Roach, revealed that it was the UFC who offered GSP the fight with St-Pierre, and that for his final fight he would like to fight Conor McGregor:
“That was the fight that was offered to us, through Dana (White),” Roach said of the Bisping matchup. “(He asked us) ‘do you want him?’ And we all thought about it, and we all said yes.”
“With the last fight, we’re hoping (for it) to be (Conor) McGregor.”
“Who wouldn’t want that fight? I mean, it’s a big fight,” Roach said. “We’d have to maybe cut weight, meet in the middle somewhere, but there’s long negotiations (that could) still happen, of course. But, who wouldn’t want that fight?”
McGregor of course is currently sidelined with the upcoming birth of his firstborn child, which will take place in May. Despite that, McGregor has been linked to a massive boxing showdown with Floyd Mayweather, which according to McGregor, is ‘very close’ to being inked.
