Joe Duffy who holds a win over Conor McGregor predicts ‘The Notorious’ to lose next UFC title fight

By Russell Ess - November 2, 2017

Prior to UFC 196, the last man to defeat Conor McGregor was Joe Duffy. McGregor and Duffy met back in 2010 at Cage Warriors Fighting Championship 39 in Ireland where Duffy submitted “The Notorious” with an arm-triangle choke in just 38 seconds of the very first round.

McGregor and Duffy went on with their careers with McGregor shooting to superstardom and Duffy also making his way to the UFC. Now, with both fighters competing in the UFC lightweight division, Duffy is still climbing the ranks while McGregor holds the UFC lightweight title.

With Duffy looking to make his way to an eventual title shot, “Irish Joe” was asked by Metro.co.uk if he thinks he and “The Notorious” will eventually meet in a rematch for the UFC lightweight title.

“No, I’m saying he’s going to lose the title [in his next fight],’ Duffy said of McGregor. “But, he’s got so much going on. Plus in lightweight, I don’t think anyone has held the belt longer than three fights.

“I think three wins is the max,” Duffy added. “It’s such a competitive division and the belt changes hands so quickly.

“Within my next seven fights…I think the belt will be changing hands.”

Duffy is correct in terms of the UFC lightweight title changing hands often as the longest reigning UFC lightweight champions, BJ Penn, Frankie Edgar, and Benson Henderson have lost the belt after their third UFC lightweight title defense.

Conor McGregor, Tony Ferguson

While McGregor has yet to defend his UFC lightweight title, all signs are pointing to “The Notorious” taking on newly crowned UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson.
