Max Holloway not confident Conor McGregor returns after potential Mayweather fight
While Conor McGregor may currently reign as the UFC lightweight champion, since winning the belt McGregor’s name has been linked to a potential boxing superfight with undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather.
While Oscar De La Hoya may not be too fond of the potential bout becoming more and more real every day, the combat sports community has. With McGregor’s side of the deal finalized, UFC President Dana White is looking to negotiate Mayweather’s end of the deal and pit these two combat sports icons against one another.
Given that, interim UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway doesn’t seem to be very confident that McGregor will return to the Octagon should a fight with Mayweather become official.
He spoke during a media luncheon:
“Would you guys come back to MMA after a fight like that?”
“Conor should be proud,” he said. “He was the champ. He should hold his belt high. At the end of the day, he’s the 2015 champ. This is two years later, and he never once talked about defending the 145-pound belt ever. Not ever.
“He talked about defending the (lightweight belt) more than he talked about defending the (featherweight belt). It’s time to move on from this chapter of life, guys. We’re not going to tell Lebron (James), ‘Hey, Lebron, you can’t show your three rings – that was three years ago.’ No, be proud; you won it. But you’ve got to play again to hold this championship, and (McGregor) is not doing that.”
“If he wants to come back after his fight, (UFC President) Dana White knows my number. We can get it done. But after getting so many meals like that, you (wonder) if he’ll ever fight again.”
Only time will tell if McGregor chooses to return to the Octagon once again, however he has made it very clear that if he were to return, it must be for a fight that excites him.
