John Kavanagh: First Nate Diaz fight "was a bit of a circus"

Back in March, Nate Diaz stepped in on less than two weeks notice to fight Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 196 after UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot during training. Diaz submitted McGregor in the second round, putting an end to McGregor’s hopes of earning a welterweight title shot, setting the stage for arguably the biggest rematch in UFC history. The pair are now slated to have their rematch at UFC 202 on August 20th in Las Vegas.

Conor McGregor’s UFC 196 loss to Nate Diaz left the MMA world stunned. While some predicted that Diaz would shock the world and win the fight, McGregor, who was previously unbeaten inside the Octagon, losing was surreal to many fans. At UFC 202 on August 20th, McGregor will get the chance to avenge his loss to Diaz when the pair square off in a rematch. Ahead of that fight, McGregor spoke to MMAJunkie to discuss what went wrong in the first fight, and what he has done to correct it ahead of the rematch.

After Conor McGregor was pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to fulfill his media obligations for the event, talk of a potential boxing superfight with legendary prizefighter Floyd Mayweather picked up. Ultimately nothing came of the rumors, and McGregor was booked to fight Nate Diaz in a highly anticipated welterweight rematch at UFC 202 on August 20th. During a recent interview with Business Post, SBG Ireland head coach John Kavanagh gave his thoughts on the bout:

Conor McGregor bit off even more than he could chew in his attempt to negotiate media appearances for his once scheduled main event at UFC 200. “The Notorious” and Nate Diaz were pulled from the main event of UFC 200 after McGregor refused to take part in media obligations to promote the historic card. Now that the two are again signed to fight at UFC 202, McGregor says that he is still fighting with the UFC over the amount of media ahead of the fight.

Following UFC 196, where Nate Diaz submitted Conor McGregor, the pair were slated to fight in the main event of UFC 200. McGregor wasn’t happy with the situation, and surprised the MMA community when he retired via Twitter. The fight was ultimately scrapped after McGregor refused to fulfill his promotional obligations for the event. Ultimately however, the pair were rebooked to fight at UFC 202 in August.

Prior to UFC 189, where Conor McGregor was initially slated to fight Jose Aldo for the UFC featherweight championship, McGregor injured his knee prior to the bout. Aldo then injured his ribs, and was replaced by Chad Mendes, who McGregor defeated via TKO to claim the interim featherweight championship. Unbeknownst to the MMA community, McGregor had trained with Rory MacDonald, and torn nearly his entire ACL leading up to UFC 189. In John Kavanagh’s new book, he recalls being in Dublin when he received a text from one of McGregor’s training partners about the situation.
